Bomb by Steve Sheinkin Book Summary

Perfect for middle grade readers and history enthusiasts, New York Times bestselling author Steve Sheinkin presents the fascinating and frightening true story of the creation behind the most destructive force that birthed the arms race and the Cold War in Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon.

A Newbery Honor book
A National Book Awards finalist for Young People's Literature
A Washington Post Best Kids Books of the Year title

In December of 1938, a chemist in a German laboratory made a shocking discovery: When placed next to radioactive material, a Uranium atom split in two. That simple discovery launched a scientific race that spanned three continents.

In Great Britain and the United States, Soviet spies worked their way into the scientific community; in Norway, a commando force slipped behind enemy lines to attack German heavy-water manufacturing; and deep in the desert, one brilliant group of scientists was hidden away at a remote site at Los Alamos. This is the story of the plotting, the risk-taking, the deceit, and genius that created the world's most formidable weapon. This is the story of the atomic bomb.

“This superb and exciting work of nonfiction would be a fine tonic for any jaded adolescent who thinks history is 'boring.' It's also an excellent primer for adult readers who may have forgotten, or never learned, the remarkable story of how nuclear weaponry was first imagined, invented and deployed—and of how an international arms race began well before there was such a thing as an atomic bomb.” —The Wall Street Journal

“This is edge-of-the seat material that will resonate with YAs who clamor for true spy stories, and it will undoubtedly engross a cross-market audience of adults who dozed through the World War II unit in high school.” —The Bulletin (starred review)

Interesting take on the Manhattan Project. A fascinating and unusual approach to telling the incredible story of the Manhattan Project. Focused on the intense competition and espionage surrounding the effort to build the bomb, this slice of history provides new insights into the motivations and vulnerabilities of the main characters in this dramatic piece of World War II history.

Spellbinding. This book really kept my interest. Didn't think I'd like a non fiction historical book so much. Author does a great job of building the characters to keep your interest. The espionage kept it exciting. Highly recommend this as a story that has not yet ended and for which we are all apart. We need to know the history of this terrible weapon.

Great read. Very informative and well told. 5 stars!

Really good and developed book. The book was interesting since I started to read and I wanted to read more and more. I am inspired of making a movie about it since I want to be a writer, director, and actor. I am only 13 years old and have had my interest in performing arts since I was 9 or 10. Loved the novel.

Intriguing. This is a great summer reading suggestion for 7th/ 8th graders studying American History. The movie, "Fat Man and Little Boy", follows the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer, elaborating on the ethical questions and physical dangers of the bomb. This however includes the Soviets goals and successes in stealing the recipe, as well as the real time race against the Nazis who were our intended target when the work at Los Alamos first began.

oh so good. so good that it is great

Fun and enjoyable. This book is very good. It was very fun and enjoyable. Young readers will probably like this book. I liked it so much that their was a time I couldn't stop reading it.

A well-researched, well-told story.. Even though it is written for middle grade readers, adults will learn something, too. It is a story about the science of and history behind atomic weapons.
