A metà degli anni Ottanta, dopo aver lasciato Apple, Steve Jobs si trovava in un momento difficile. Le vendite dei suoi nuovi computer Next stagnavano e nel cinico ambiente dei tecnologi e tra i giornalisti economici si mormorava che il suo declino fosse inesorabile. Fu quello il momento più importante della sua amicizia con Kobun Chino Otogawa, un monaco buddista zen emigrato negli Usa dal Giappone all'inizio degli anni Settanta, un innovatore con scarsa considerazione delle regole e con una grande passione per l'arte e il design. Kobun fu per il buddismo ciò che Jobs rappresentò per il business dei computer, un rinnegato e un anticonformista, così non ci volle molto perché i due diventassero amici. Questo primo graphicnovel dedicato al fondatore di Apple è la rivisitazione immaginaria della loro amicizia e traccia un ideale e originale parallelismo tra gli insegnamenti zen del monaco e i momenti più salienti della vita di jobs e della storia di Apple. Con un dialogo spoglio e tavole dal segno calligrafico, e attraverso frequenti flashback e salti in avanti - dagli anni Settanta al 2011-, il libro racconta come Jobs ha affinato la sua estetica del design attraverso lo studio delle regioni orientali, ma alla fine abbia preso dallo zen solo ciò che gli serviva, lasciando il resto - compresa l'amicizia con Kabun - dietro di sé. Una storia coinvolgente e commuovente. Un tassello fondamentale che contribuisce a definire in modo inedito la personalità, le convinzioni e il senso del trascendente del più grande visionario dei nostri tempi.
