Name and Number: Based On a True Story by John Hoskison Book Summary

Art student Nick Wood risks selling a few Ecstasy tablets at a party to impress friends and ends up with a two year prison sentence.

Nick hopes to spend his sentence in an open prison, the type he's read about in the papers. The ones often referred to as 'holiday camps'. Instead, his worst nightmare comes true.

Locked up in HMP Blackthorpe, a prison known for its medieval-like squalor, Nick lives at the mercy of the drug barons and in fear of the lifers. Constantly stalked by danger he has to find a way to survive.

To earn protection money he turns to the one thing he's good at—art. But can selling pictures to visitors be enough to keep the mob at bay? Or will he be made an example of by the hard men and suffer the worst type of prison punishment?

Based on the experiences of the author.

ABOUT JOHN HOSKISON:
In 1994, bestselling author John Hoskison broke a lifetime rule by drinking and driving and on his way home, he hit and killed a cyclist. As a non-violent first offender, he was told he would serve part of his sentence in an open prison, but was instead consigned to some of the toughest in Britain.

John was only able to survive his time in prison through the incredible forgiveness he received from the woman whom he'd made a widow and by the support of friends and family who knew his actions were so out of character.

Now John spends time speaking to young people at schools and through community out-reach programs, warning them about taking unnecessary risks and what prison is really like. If anyone is under the illusion that prison is a holiday camp, and that breaking the law just once is worth the risk, read this book.

Name and Number. I read this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. It's scary that one wrong, small decision can shape your life. Certainly makes you think. Easy to read, well written and provoking. Buy it. The authors first book, Inside, is also a great read. Buy both.

Wow!. Im currently reading this book and I can honestly say that it's absolutely amazing! It's taught me so much and honestly should be introduced to all children who are vulnerable to becoming offenders. It's a must read!! What an amazing book which isn't just some boring book, it's got brilliant educational purposes but not enough for you to even notice! Just an all round brilliant book

Powerful & Gripping. This amazing first novel gives a vivid picture of how one mistake can result in such terrible punishment . You can practically smell what it must be like to be in prison and the central character's fear is gripping. The fact that the author has himself been in prison ( his autobiography, Inside, is also a must read) makes this novel even more powerful. What also impressed was that it's not preachy , it's an exciting story very well told but behind it you also feel how easily anyone of us can be in that terrible situation. Hopefully this will be the first of many exciting novels. For me one of the highlights of fiction in 2012!

Name and number. Fantastic book, I couldn't put it down. A real insight to the horrors of prison. I will definitely encourage my son to read it.

Great. Another great read. Well done John !

Inside. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I hope this book deters others from taking the wrong path.

G Macdonald. Great read, fast paced superb story of a young mans plight inside a tough prison. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading

Name and number. This book was very interesting to read and helps you understand an insight into the life behind bars. Very well put across too.

Name and number. Brilliant, I loved this book well worth reading

Yet again another riveting read. Just like Johns original book Inside this is superb. With his real life experiences coming through in the story you can't help but keep reading. Love it!

Names and Numbers. Great read relating to the reality of prison all because a young person couldn't say no. Having read John's first book written about his own experiences, this is a great fictional read, although I imagine to be quite factual on the reality of living through a prison sentence. A must read book for young people who need a little help to stay on the straight and narrow!

Wow. Never wrote a review on here think this guy is well worth it after not reading for years I've read both John hoskinson's books in a week. FANTASTIC

Fiction. It's a good read, but I'd don't know why it's in the non-fiction section. In one of the first few pages it points out that it is complete fiction. Though his other book on prison is a true story.

Another great book!. I read his first book and was so impressed with the writing I contacted John to tell him. He contacted me back and seems a really nice guy! This book like his first is written from the heart and the horror of being inside for the first time. Frightened the life out of me! I have since given it to my kids to read and recommended it to everyone I know who has kids, especially teenagers. I live in a nice middle class village and have noticed the escalation in drug use and associated crime over the past few years here in our nice safe environment. But I work in a tough area and see it on the streets every day. These books should be part of the school ciriculum. I dont know anyone who has read them that it hasnt had an impact on. Well done John!

Name and number. This is an excellent read, couldn't put it down! It certainly makes you think about what goes on behind "closed" doors - recommend this and 'Inside'.

What if you aren't so lucky?. Thinking of committing a crime or already have? The lad in this story gets lucky but not everyone in prison does - could you cope living in constant fear with little to aim for? It's ultimately your choice, read this book or don't, end up in prison or don't, have a life..... or don't! Really good read about what can happen if you simply make a poor choice in life and don't stop to think. Read it before that bad choice is yours!

Name and Number by John Hoskison. Brilliant.... once again John you nailed it. I just want to read more & more as I feel a weight being drawn from my shoulders and doors closing which have remained open since my brothers release some years ago. Wow!! What can I say?? Once again John, you managed to answer a lot of my questions about how things really are in prison. You would have to be living in the nightmare, as I once was, to know that this, is as near as you will ever get to the truth of how bad it gets. I have a better understanding of how the system works and its quite remarkable how this book as confirmed many things for me. Suspicions I had known to be true .. but dared not admit could really be happening. My brother went to prison for five years and ironically got transferred to HMP Full Sutton (cat a prison) and put on a wing with lifers, on the strength of a note either from inside or outside by an anonymous person sent to the governor!! My brother doesn't talk about it, he never would, Thank you John, although its been hard to read In parts ...it's once again proved "beyond reasonable doubt" that prison really iz how you say it is. You would have to know my story to write with such accuracy and you don't ....nobody does. So it leaves me sad in the knowing that my worse suspicions were true. But happy my brother came out on the other side, but his secret life on the inside will remain secret. You have given me what he never would or feel he could and that's the full horror of the truth of what life behind bars is really like. A must read for any age and leaves no stone unturned. I can't wait for the next one. May I add that my brothers transfer to Full Sutton, which i will never forget & remember was the worse day of my life. But it ended up being the best thing to happen to my brother, the lifers in Full Sutton were of a different kind and sadly they have nothing to lose. It's such a terrible shame but things do go wrong and in a second your life can be changed forever....and many of his inmates were proof of this, their life's were changed forever & will now be lived behind bars.

Good fast paced read. Enjoyed it

Name & number. I would recommend this book to all, very interesting, well written and a real page turner could not put it down!

Name & number, John Hoskins.. Awesum, a definite must read. The story of life "inside". Once u start reading u can't put it down.

Name & Number. Praise to John Hoskison for his new book Name and Number. Another insight to the horrors of prison life. John tells this story so well as he can relate to his own experiences. A great read and I would highly recommend downloading it. 5 stars awarded from a fan. Well John John and I can't wait for your next book.

Name & Number. A review in 1 word...* Brilliant*!

Must read!!!. This book and the author are amazing. I have read a book by this author (inside) of his true life after he made a big mistake and ended up paying for his mistake in prison. He shows how no matter who you are or what you do you can make mistakes. This book is aimed at young people who may be in danger of making the wrong choices in life. This is a must read for any parents concerned about their children going down the wrong path, also for teenagers that might decide crime is the best route. I will defiantly follow this author he just shows how life can change

Name and number. An easy read, though ending was predictable...

Name and number. Having read the author's "Inside", I decided to read his first attempt at a novel. I thought it was a great read and really felt a connection with the main character. I also liked the way that the author pulled in the other characters. If you like prison books and I've read many this is a well written and thought provoking book. Buy and enjoy.

Name and Number. Once again John takes you into his world as if watching a movie, another inspirational read which i will encourage my sons to read to teach them important lessons in life.

Another Great Read. Another compelling read by John Hoskinson, that draws you in from page one. Fiction based on fact, the facts that fill one with terror at what one foolish act can do to YOUR cosy life. Every young person should read this and keep it close in mind when they are drawn by the foolish acts of youth. There is a price to pay beyond your worst imaginings. Don't think YOUR outcome will be a fairy story.

1 word ... Excellent !. An excellent read from start to finish, tough to put down. This is a great follow-up to 'Inside', the fiction backing up the facts.

A quick read. Short and fairly entertaining - a bit of a shallow feel for me but a good quick read none the less.

Chilling story. A great story based on one mans experience in prison. It highlights the fact that anyone can end up in prison if they make an error in judgement or just cannot say no.

A truly gripping read.. Hoskison has proven his brilliance in written word again and provides readers with yet another gripping read- this time, one of a fictional account but still no less true to what can be endured through time served at one of her Majesty's prisons. The story is based loosely on what can found about British prison life and what is experienced by those who don't ever expect to find themselves amongst society's worst. A young man, having made a regretful mistake in life, serves his imposed punishment in a setting of complete hostility and must learn to cope with the fear and uncertainty found within its walls, proving to himself and others that he can prevail its woes. This is a must read following on from Hoskison's first book- 'Inside', his true life account of his own spell in prison. 'Name And Number' is a worthy telling of such a limited and formidable place, and how it can affect a man so much in such an arduous amount of time. Download this book now.

Quality. This was a great read ! I've read both of johns books now and they they truly grip you ! Well worth downloading !!! Hope for another one :)

Easy reading.. I brought this book after enjoying inside , I also enjoyed this one very much. I found about a dozen repeated words in the book which kept throwing me off, and I feel the end was rushed a little. Other then that I enjoyed my late night reads! I will 100 percent buy again if a new book comes out.

Name and Number. I will be definitely reading this book after reading Inside - a True Story. The experience of prison life which John so eloquently portrayed should be read by everyone who thinks they are above the law and that prison is a soft touch. Breaking the law is not a badge of honour it has serious consequences which can last a lifetime and the more this message is conveyed the better. Keep up the good work John

Name and Number. After reading Johns first book 'Inside', I was pleased to have found his second book. From the moment I started reading Name and Number, I couldn't put the book down. An insight to the truth behind the lies of what goes on behind bars and how an individual prisoner understands very quickly the importance of the truth kept aside for the survival of not only his family. But for himself.

"Compelling reading". Having already read "Inside" which I have to say, for me,was a literary delight.. I was really excited at the prospect of reading this fictional book. John, once again, has you hooked from the start. He has the ability to make you empathise with Nick and the awful predicament he finds himself in. It gives such an insight into life behind bars and doesnt paint the picture we perceive prison life to be! I really feel both these books should be on the read list for the national curriculum. If it stops one young person choosing the wrong path then it will have been worthwhile putting it in schools. Well done John, you are an inspiration!

Name and number. What a gripping story of courage and strength.

Excellent read. Loved reading this. After reading "inside" I was pleased to learn about this new book. Here's hoping there's more to come

Another awesome read. This is a an easy to read well written hard hitting book, a must for an library especially in schools and kids homes

Once again..... Once again this book triggered a range of emotions in me just as 'inside' did. It is hard to really capture a reader in such a way that they are too captivated to put the book down, and John does this perfectly! Another great book- my favourite author of this year by far! Keep up the great work. :)

Excellent. You know when you pick up a John Hoskison book you will find it very difficult to put down. If you have never heard of John I implore you to immediately download his books, lock the doors, put your feet up and read! This is a gripping and often terrifying account of life in prison.

Really good book !. I couldn't put it away it was that good !!! 5stars!!!

Name and Number. This is another excellent book written by John. The first, Inside, is also a 'must read'. Aside from the fact these incredible stories are written from John's real life experience, he is also putting his own time into trying to spread the word how easy it is for any one of us to be jailed just from a simple mistake. These books are hard to put down once you start, I highly recommend them for any age.

Second best book I've read, ever.. I read johns first book inside and couldn't put it down. This book although fiction would be drawn from some of his experiences. My 15 year old is now reading it and has come to me with questions about prison here in Australia. This book is a must read wether your 15 to 100 you will be captivated by the plot and the who done it.

Name & Number. Another fine example giving the reader an insight into what horror greets the new prisoner. This book details with stark realism the day to day fear that this young man must endure. John Hoskisons' offering is exceptional reading and well worth the effort. I can't put it down... Read it in two days... Looking forward to more from John Hoskison. Lindsay Curtis Sydney Australia

Name and number. Another good book by John Hoskison, The strength of the contents are drawn from John,s own life as a prison inmate and the uniquely intimate understanding of prison life, this lets the author bring you inside and shock you with truth and horror of a boy,s adversity and triumph,a rarely told story of how easy life can go to an unexpected path ,so far removed from from the tv non scene we are fed on a daily basis.it is a blessing to follow an author in truth and understanding of a world of horror and terror we cannot understand . In today's world of raising teen agers ,all parents and family members-should read this book it will serve as a beacon of hope and understanding,it will teach you how to find the path mearly by reading a fascinating story of life as it really is. This book should be required school reading, believe me from the sixth grade onward educators will have a line up for this honest novel

Name and Number. Again John has hit it out of the park with this real life drama. It is so intense and well written I felt like I was in prison with the character ,the fear the anxiety was just to real. It was thought provoking and I come away with a spence of hope. Johns real life experience reviled in his book INSIDE shows through and has given him an edge. Well done John.

Name & Number. I've read John Hoskison's book Inside so was really excited about his new book. It is an inspiring feel-good book with a great moral lesson. A must for all youngsters to read. The author is a humble intelligent man who truly relates to youth and writes with simplicity and passion.
