John Donne tenía 52 años cuando escribió esta obra de una actualidad y una belleza sorprendentes. Tras un ataque de tifus, cayó gravemente enfermo en 1623 y, a raíz del padecimiento que ello le supuso, escribió sus Meditaciones. Entre ellas se encuentra la número 17, conocida por servir de base al título de la novela de Hemingway Por quién doblan las campanas. La muerte, el amor y la presencia de Dios conforman el andamiaje de estas meditaciones, pero cada una de ellas ejerce su fuerza de una manera distinta, poética y profunda.
Este libro es un ejercicio de observación casi empírico que huye de la descripción fisiológica de la enfermedad y alcanza la metafísica.
