प्रेमचन्द का जन्म ३१ जुलाई सन् १८८० को बनारस शहर से चार मील दूर समही गाँव में हुआ था। आपके पिता का नाम अजायब राय था। वह डाकखाने में मामूली नौकर के तौर पर काम करते थे।
प्रेमचन्द के कहानी साहित्य में राष्ट्रीयता का स्वर सबसे ज्यादा मुखर है। उस युग के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन ने ही प्रेमचन्द जैसे संवेदनशील कलाकारों में राष्ट्रीयता जैसा प्रबल भाव डाला था। प्रेमचन्द गाँधी जी से बहुत प्रभावित हुए थे और राष्ट्रीयता के क्षेत्र में उन्हें अपना आदर्श मानकर चले थे। माँ, अनमन, दालान (मानसरोवर-१) कुत्सा, डामुल का कैदी (मानसरोवर-२) माता का हृदय, धिक्कार, लैला (मानसरोवर-३) सती (मानसरोवर-५) जेल, पत्नी से पति, शराब की दुकान जलूस, होली का उपहार कफन, समर यात्रा सुहाग की साड़ी (मानसरोवर-७) तथा आहुति इत्यादि वे कहानियाँ हैं जिनमें राष्ट्रीयता के विष्य को प्रमुखता से डाला गया है।
इन कहानियों ने प्रेमचन्द ने एक इतिहासकार की भांति राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के चित्र खींचे हैं। गाँधी जी से प्रेमचन्द काफी प्रभावित थे। उन्होंने विश्वास जैसी कहानी के माध्यम से गाँधी जी के आदर्शों को लोगों के सामने प्रस्तुत किया।
प्रेमचन्द के मानस में भारतीय संस्कार अपेक्षाकृत अधिक प्रबल थे। विदेशी सभ्यता, संस्कृति आचरण एवं शिक्षा के प्रति उनकी आस्था दुर्बल थी। प्रेमचन्द को अपने देश और यहाँ की चीजों से अथाह प्रेम था।
