Tango del mudo by Luis Benítez Book Summary
Una de las nuevas voces más destacadas de la literatura latinoamericana, Luis
Benítez nos lleva de la mano -en esta novela que ha sido elogiada por el
uruguayo Enrique Estrázulas y la argentina Alicia Dujovne Ortiz- a un viaje
por el tiempo. El protagonista es Severiano Cárdenas, un periodista fracasado
que, por casualidad, descubre la vía para llegar hasta el comienzo del siglo
XX, donde conoce al autor del primer tango-canción, Pascual Contursi. En su
compañía compartirá penurias y aventuras y será introducido en el mundo del
tango, hasta convertirse en el chofer, factótum y confidente de Carlos Gardel.
En clave de narración fantástica (óptica antes no abordada para tratar el
tema) Benítez nos lleva a conocer no sólo la intimidad del máximo astro de la
canción ciudadana, sino también las bambalinas de la gloria y las miserias que
constituían la escenografía general donde se desarrollaba el apogeo del tango.
Las figuras más conocidas del género desfilan por las páginas de esta novela,
desde Enrique Cadícamo y Tita Merello hasta Enrique Santos Discépolo, desde
Alfredo Lepera y Tito Lusiardo hasta José Razzano y muchos más. Un verdadero
fresco de época por donde se deslizan las tribulaciones de Severiano Cárdenas,
un hombre de fines del siglo XX que sabe todo lo que sucederá antes de la
muerte del ídolo en Medellín, en 1935, sin poder evitarla. Mientras continúa
envejeciendo en una época que no es la suya, Cárdenas intenta sumarse a cuanto
sucede a su alrededor, aunque se sabe un satélite más de todos los que giran
en torno de la máxima voz cantante del tango argentino. Premiada en las dos
orillas del Río de la Plata, **_Tango del Mudo_** conjuga historia real e
imaginación para darle al lector una visión originalísima del mundo tanguero,
con un final tan inesperado como sorprendente.
