Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679), dessen Denken von den europäischen Konfessions- und Bürgerkriegen des 17. Jahrhunderts geprägt war, steht für einen Paradigmenwechsel innerhalb der politischen Philosophie. Diese ging seit Platon und Aristoteles von der Opposition zwischen gerechtem und ungerechtem Gemeinwesen aus. Hobbes jedoch »erfand« für sein Zeitalter eine neue Opposition: die von Herrschaftslosigkeit und Herrschaft. Chaos und Krieg sollten durch die Einsetzung eines absoluten Souveräns gebannt werden. Damit war Hobbes Wegbereiter einer neuen Regierungsform. Herfried Münklers bekannte Einführung in die Philosophie von Thomas Hobbes liegt nun in einer aktualisierten Neuauflage vor.
