Workers Win the War by Peter Pappas Book Summary

Travel back in time to the WWII American homefront. Experience first-hand how the government mobilized public support for the war through higher taxes, hard work and sacrifice. Contrast that era with our "homefront" experience today, when only our troops and their families have been asked to make sacrifices for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This book is rich with interactive widgets that showcase WWII media -  80 posters, 18 films, cartoons, radio broadcast, recording and sheet music and a dozen rarely-seen pamphlets - from Bugs Bunny selling bonds in blackface, to Burns and Allen joking on the radio about rationing, to posters claiming taking a sick day was treasonous.

It's your chance to be the historian as provocative questions guide you through the archives while building your critical thinking / Common Core skills. The book also provides web access to the public domain content so you can remix the historic documents into your own projects.

"Workers Win the War" is an enhanced, multi-touch book written by Peter Pappas, a well-known teacher, instructional designer and educational blogger.

Another Great iBook. This iBook is a great follow-up to Peter's first book. This book is full of primary source materials and I also appreciate the links to common core standards. Nice job!

Great book and Common Core connections. Like all of his stuff, Peter does an excellent job in this book of creating substantive content with robust scaffolding. In addition, I really appreciate the Common Core connections. Great resource!

Another Amazing Book. Peter's first book was great. I didn't think he could make another book that seemed as new and fresh as the first. I was wrong. Peter has a great sense of how to make a book look. This book is full of wonderful images, audio and video. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in war history. Amazing. Well done Peter! Well done!

Think Like a Historian. You don't have to go deep into the iTunes Bookstore to find eBooks that offer shallow and incomplete analysis of history, but that is not what you'll get with Peter Pappas's books. Peter has again given us a thought-provoking multimedia march through an intriguing period in American History - one that is not well enough understood. Workers Win the War is a perfect tool for teaching students to think like Historians, and to draw their own conclusions. But you don't have to be a teacher to appreciate the amazing collection of historical documents! Whether you're a history buff or just interested in WWII, this is an essential offering you should grab immediately.

A Significant Resource for Today's Learners. Workers Win the War is an impressive companion to Peter Pappas' first book Why We Fight. His skillful combination of photographic, audio and visual sources, supported by brief, concise text and probing questions, stimulates the student to interact with primary sources on multiple levels. Particularly noteworthy is the selection of governmental propaganda posters which have been precisely organized in a manner that will cause the " reader" to reach conclusions about the American worker of WW II compared to the American worker today. The new portrait format enables the student to view each poster full screen - very helpful for analysis. A rich array of resources, including a selection of rarely viewed pamphlets, encourages a historian's stance of inquiry. As with the first book, Why We Fight, the format and organization allow for independent, small group or large group instruction which makes the material suitable for traditional classrooms, tutorials, and on-line classrooms. The book fosters learning behaviors explicit in the Common Core Standards, such as: comprehending, critiquing, evaluating evidence, understanding multiple perspectives, reading closely and reading analytically. This book exemplifies the direction history study must assume to be meaningful to students.

An eTextbook for Thinking. This collection of primary source materials for the study of American History is all the more valuable and useful because of the skillful inclusion of questions and activities that call for Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The critical difference is that other texts aim at learning historical facts whereas "Workers Win the Way" by Peter Pappas focuses on learning how to link as an historian would.

Great primary sources. Mr. Pappas has compiled an excellent resource for students and teachers. The book is filled with engaging graphics and clear text that will stimulate learning about this crucial period in American history. This book should have a place in every American History classroom.
