Exploring Numbers Through Dot Patterns by Ronit Bird Book Summary

Written by dyscalculia expert Ronit Bird, this is a book for parents who are looking for practical ways of helping their child to develop a feel for numbers.

The book is about teaching for understanding through numeracy games and hands-on experience of concrete materials, all based on familiar dot patterns such as those found on dice and dominoes. There are no tricks or shortcuts, no rote learning, no songs, no drill and repetition and absolutely no worksheets. The ideas have been designed specifically for children who struggle with maths but they would be equally suitable for teaching the basics of numeracy to any child, either at home or at school.

An e-book format is ideal for focusing on exactly the kind of visual approach to learning that best suits most dyscalculic children. The author has taken full advantage of the unique capabilities of an e-book, as compared to a print book, by not only including colourful illustrations on virtually every page but also embedding more than 20 short demonstration videos into the text. Each teaching video clearly demonstrates what to do and what to say as you help your child learn the essential facts and number connections that will lead to the development of simple and effective calculation strategies.

Great resource!. This is a very well-thought out book, full of ideas for helping your child if they're struggling with math ā€” it's aimed at dyscalculic children, but the games and activities are a superb way of helping your child if they're learning basic addition and subtraction skills, whatever age they are. The videos walk you through everything you need to know as a parent for each activity, and make this far more useful than a paper edition would be.

Excellent resource. This is an excellent resource for understanding the relationship between numbers. It helped my son master his addition facts after trying countless other curricula and approaches. We will be using the multiplication book as well.

Excellent Material for Teaching Child with Dyscalculia. I was on the hunt to find something that would teach in the way our Dyscalculia child understands numbers. I wish I had been able to find these e-books sooner. I first discovered Ronit Birdā€™s Dyscalculia Toolkit book, but was confused on how to use it as a parent. A couple of yearrs later I discovered these e-books, and I love the sequential steps in this e-book and the videos. At first I was overwhelmed by the volume of words in each chapter - at first glance it looked too overhwhelming to use, but after reading all the fine before I teach each lesson, I find lots of gold nuggets in the teaching and am able to better understand my daughter and how she processes numbers. We have gone from my daughter hating math class in school, to telling me that she loves math class with me! Also, I have seen real progress in how she is able to translate her way of understanding number to life. This book is a game changer. I would recommend starting here, even though it seems basic. I initially thought we could start with the Fractions and Decimals e-book, but realized my daughter didnā€™t have the basics required, so we started back at the beginning with this one, and are now working through the 2nd book about Cuisenaire Rods. I highly recommend this book series for any parent wanting to understand their Dyscalculia child and to truly help them work with numbers.

If your child has dyscalculia or dyslexia, you NEED this!!!. I have no clue why there are low star ratings for this and it doesnā€™t seem like any of them left reviews. Iā€™ve used this book for months now with my very bright (gifted IQ) son who has dyslexia and difficulties with math. He had NO sense of numbers, so ā€œthreeā€ meant nothing to him and could have been dog or cat. Number words didnā€™t connect to fingers, so he couldnā€™t hear a number and put up his fingers. All the normal things you do at this age like showing the parts of 10 by moving your fingers (9 and 1, 8 and 2, etc.) meant nothing to him. What a change with Ronit Bird! Each chapter goes through very small steps, with clear pictures, showing you how to present the concepts, how to play games with the concepts, how to explore and play with them. The videos are awesome. For me the best part is using it on my ipad, since my ipad is always with me. LOVE it. What has been AMAZING to me is how many concepts have come together in my sonā€™s mind doing such simple things. He now enjoys exploring patterns with numbers and can visualize his basic math facts up to 10 and solve simple story problems. We have a long road ahead of us, but Iā€™m excited to continue using the Ronit Bird materials and help him continue to develop his number sense and his ability to do math! As a homeschooler Iā€™ve used or owned almost every other math curriculum out there in the homeschool market. Thereā€™s NOTHING so detailed and careful as Ronit Birdā€™s materials for getting in the brain of a child with serious math issues due to dyslexia or dyscalculia. Highly, highly, highly recommend!

An eye-opener. Watch out! This book takes a while to download, even on a decent broadband. But that is because it is packed with video - various teaching games, demonstrations, quizzes, and practical activities. Bird has used the resources of an electronic book very imaginatively. Thoughtfully, Bird has consciously decided not to include her own voice as a soundtrack to the videos. That means that you, the parent, explain things and pose questions on the basis of your existing relationship of trust with your child. There is no intrusive stranger wagging a finger or criticising - the atmosphere of play and shared exploration can be much more comfortably and easily established. A typically thoughtful and insightful approach. This work is full of such considered and constructive judgements. This book will help your children to master numbers. As someone still struggling with numeracy at a later stage in life, I must say that I found it an incredible eye-opener.

Great resource for parents!. Clear and thorough, this book is full of activities and games that are easy to play, making learning fun for the child. The demonstration videos are really helpful to see exactly how to interact with and encourage the child to learn in a way that promotes their actual understanding of how numbers work. I would highly recommend!

Brilliant. This is without doubt lesson number 1 in the journey of teaching mathematics. We are all taught that teaching of numbers 1 to 10 using counters is the beginning, however arranging them in dice formation is the way whether one is dyscalculic or not. Only a genius could have thought of this and Ronit has produced a work of genius demonstrated through her excellent videos. A must for all teachers.

A Great Buy!. I have been teaching Maths for many many years in schools, state and independent, and privately to pupils with dyscalculia and those looking to gain entry to leading senior schools. This is a wonderful resource for both parents and teachers. It gives clear, step by step, instructions and very useful videos and helps the teacher to go back to the exact place the difficulties and gaps in mathematical understanding may be. Don't bother with anything else!

Exploring numbers through dot patterns. I loved this ebook. It is practical and accessible, both to parents and teachers. I particularly liked the videos showing clearly what was explained in the text. I have used Ronit Bird's materials and approach with a number of children and this is a very useful addition. A thorough understanding of these very basic elements of number are essential if real progress is to be made. I look forward to the next books in the series.

Help your child develop a real understanding of number. This book tackles some basic number facts in a truly multi-sensory way, making full use of the opportunities offered by the e-book format. The activities promote real understanding because the learner is fully involved and discovers facts for themselves. Many adults lack confidence in their maths abilities, but the unobtrusive guidance offered in the videos and games and clear explanations make this book accessible to any parent - or teacher. I have been using this book with some of my dyslexic and dyspraxic pupils over the last few weeks and they have loved it - and I have seen increased confidence and understanding in the way they use number patterns to help solve problems. I wish that I'd had this book 15 years ago when my dyslexic daughter's maths teacher said that he didn't know how to teach her! Thorouhgly recommended.

A step by step guide to help your child learn maths!. I would highly recommend this very practical e-book. It is an invaluable resource for parents to use with children who are struggling with grasping the early concepts of number. The explanations are clear, concise and easy to follow. The activities and games are supplemented by demonstration videos which ensure that the child learns the essential facts whilst supporting numeracy in a fun way. I have been a teacher for many years and will gladly recommend this book to parents wishing to support their child's numeracy at home.

A useful aid to parents of dyscalculic children. The book provides a series of activities and games to support a child's understanding of number beyond a simple notion of counting in ones. The games are well explained with pictures and video clips using dice, dominoes, pen and paper. As a teacher with many years experience, I can really see the usefulness of these exercises. The book is excellent value for money and could save a fortune in tutoring fees!

Mr. Must Have ! Ronit Bird has used her vast experience to write a much needed, multi sensory maths book aimed at children with Dyscalculia. Many of the methods and ideas incorporated in the book could also be used with any children. It is easy to follow and the videos are very helpful and unique. They alsomake it easier for parents to help their children at home. This book is a must have!
