George Washington's Secret Six by Brian Kilmeade & Don Yaeger Book Summary

“As a Long Islander endlessly fascinated by events that happened in a place I call home, I hope with this book to give the secret six the credit they didn’t get in life. The Culper spies represent all the patriotic Americans who give so much for their country but, because of the nature of their work, will not or cannot take a bow or even talk about their missions.”
—Brian Kilmeade

When General George Washington beat a hasty retreat from New York City in August 1776, many thought the American Revolution might soon be over. Instead, Washington rallied—thanks in large part to a little-known, top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring.

Washington realized that he couldn’t beat the British with military might, so he recruited a sophisticated and deeply secretive intelligence network to infiltrate New York. So carefully guarded were the members’ identities that one spy’s name was not uncovered until the twentieth century, and one remains unknown today. But by now, historians have discovered enough information about the ring’s activities to piece together evidence that these six individuals turned the tide of the war.

Drawing on extensive research, Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger have painted compelling portraits of George Washington’s secret six:

Robert Townsend, the reserved Quaker merchant and reporter who headed the Culper Ring, keeping his identity secret even from Washington; Austin Roe, the tavern keeper who risked his employment and his life in order to protect the mission; Caleb Brewster, the brash young longshoreman who loved baiting the British and agreed to ferry messages between Connecticut and New York; Abraham Woodhull, the curmudgeonly (and surprisingly nervous) Long Island bachelor with business and family excuses for traveling to Manhattan; James Rivington, the owner of a posh coffeehouse and print shop where high-ranking British officers gossiped about secret operations; Agent 355, a woman whose identity remains unknown but who seems to have used her wit and charm to coax officers to share vital secrets.

In George Washington’s Secret Six, Townsend and his fellow spies finally receive their due, taking their place among the pantheon of heroes of the American Revolution.

Very Inlighting. I have always been more on the WWII but like some one else wrote this book has opened my mind to read more about George Washington and our revolutionary war for independents. Very well written and informative and a page turner.

Secret Six. I found the book very interesting and informative. As a history buff I have always been more interested in WWII stories and facts. Brian's book rekindles my interest in learning more about the history of the American Revolution. Well Done!

Fascinating. I couldn't put this book down. What a patriotic true story of the first American Patrioits.

George Washington's Secret Six. It was like being back in Social Studies again. The book goes in more detail on how the revolutionaries beat the British through a spy ring. It was interesting to read about Benedict Arnold's actions and beliefs that lead to treason. Lastly, I learned onion juice can be used as invincible ink. Good to know!

George Washington's Secret Six. Was captured from the first page. A spellbinding historical account of the greatest period of the United States foundations.

George washington's Secret Six. I always find books based on solid research that expand on my superficial understanding of colonial history to be enlightening. This book does that and more. I thought it was well-paced, succinct, and enjoyable. I never knew Setauket was so vital in our nations founding! I highly recommend this book.

Underwhelming. I was hoping for something deeper and better written, considering the subject matter. The work reads like a slightly confusing middle school text book. If not for the interesting topic, this book would have remained on the night stand.

Unreadable. Dry, bland, colorless writing. Factually inaccurate. Little attempt to create interest through a story arc. I very seldom leave a book unfinished - this is one of them.

George Washington's Secret Six. This is a riveting account of a vitally important chapter in our nation's early history. We see how fragile our quest for independence was; how strategic George Washington was in combatting the British; how selflessly courageous the spy ring was. My thanks to Brian Kilmeade for his passion and persistence in bringing this topic to life.

Secret 6 Tour!. I am an educator. I have always loved science and never gave social studies much pause. That's due in part to my teachers and the boring, required reading of social studies back in the day. If this book was on our list in the 70's, I would have loved social studies. I can't seem to get enough history now! In fact, I am ready to go on the Secret 6 Tour. I want to go see where these things happened! I want to share this with our students! Thanks Brian. Secret Six. A most read to understand how the revolution was so hard to win. My thanks to all those brave souls.

George Washington’s Secret Six. Couldn’t put this book down. So interesting how the spy ring managed to pass along their findings to Washington, and all that these Patriots went through to ensure our incredible United States of America. With God’s help and their courage, we find ourselves living in the greatest country ever.

LOVE IT!. I can’t say enough great things about this book. Gives you a completely different perspective of The Revolution and our fight for independence. The small details is what I really enjoyed about this book.

Inlightment. Thank you Brian and Don. Most enjoyable and informative. Outside of the Civil War never had a great interest in the War for Independence. Again, thank you.

The Secret Six. Incredible! As much as I read history, never knew this ring was organized and the risks the members endured.

George Washington's Secret Six. An interesting read that seems well researched but the writing and structure of the book makes reading a chore at times. At the beginning of the book the author states that work will be a historical work with elements of the novel worked in to help readability. I would have preferred the book to have been more novel with less emphasis on historical text that sometimes slows the reading to a grinding halt. In my opinion, a novel delivering fully developed characters and a story based on the facts of the Culper Ring would have been much more enjoyable read.

George Washington's Secret Six. Excellent! Should be required reading in schools. It would make history so much more enjoyable and meaningful.

A superb work. The account of the Culper Ring is as fascinating as it is a source of pride in our begins as a nation and in our first President’s skill in fighting for our independence. The ring’s members are portrayed clearly, and as thoroughly as the surviving evidence permits. The historical context comes alive and pulls the reader in the midst of the moment. It is a pleasure to read such well researched and written work.

Washington's Secret Six. Great book! Once I started reading it was hard to stop. It is important for us to know and understand what it took gain our independence.

Make a movie.. The Secret Six is very enjoyable reading, compelling to finish. I think a movie based on the book could be a "real" compliment to all of the mythology usually fed to the public about the Revolutionary War.

BETTER STRUCTURE NEEDED. The story does not flow well, and presents facts, but not in an interesting storytelling narrative. Kilmeade tried, better luck nextime - from a Historian.

Secret six. If you enjoy Fox News or reading at a 5th grade level you will love this book

George Washington's Secret Six. I loved this book, I coulnd't put it down. I wish history class was more like this when I was in school. This is a must read if you enjoy history.

The Best. This book was so well written I enjoyed every minute reading it. I believe this book could be made into a movie and be entertaining. If so I would like to see my name in the credits for recommending this book as a movie. The best book I have read in a while.

Amazing. Can't wait to see the movie!

A great read, one of the most interesting history books I've read. Idk why this book is getting such bad ratings, it's one of the best ones I've read over the last few years. Kilmeade really gives you an up-close and personal view on what happened during washingtons spy war, and tells you thing I swear you don't know. I can see why Donald Trump's review for it was so good. I highly recommend this book to any young readers looking to ear more about the ups and downs of the revolution at war.

OK. It was okay, at times boring, Brian need to stick to his day job.

Ghostwritten pedantic garbage. Brian Kilmeade’s ghost written book reflects someone else’s textbook understanding of American history. There’s nothing new here. Don’t waste your money. Meachem, Chernow, Goodwin et al do a much better job. Kilmeade should stick to whatever it is he does better (I’m not sure exactly what that is).
