Kukum cuenta la historia de Almanda, bisabuela del autor, que enamorada de un joven innu de Quebec, adoptará con entusiasmo su forma de vida nómada: la existencia libre en el bosque de acuerdo a los ciclos de la naturaleza. Se convertirá en una auténtica innu aunque siempre conservará el hábito de la lectura, rompiendo así las barreras impuestas a las mujeres indígenas. En la madurez, tendrá que enfrentarse a la pérdida de sus tierras, el encierro en las reservas y la violencia de los internados, todo ello en nombre del progreso.
Contado en un tono intimista, el relato de Almanda, que se desarrolla a lo largo de un siglo, expresa el apego a los valores ancestrales y a la necesidad de libertad que aún hoy sienten los pueblos nómadas.
