Very moving. And educational. I wasn’t very familiar with WWI, other than basic history. So this book was more than a gay love story; it was also educational, a history lesson, about the horrors of that particular war. It too a little getting into it because of all the British terms and society. But ultimately I really loved this. I think it goes in my list of top ten reads.

Brilliant. I cannot find the words to accurately describe how wonderful this novel is. It truly is a masterpiece of writing. The story, the characters, the WWI brutality and the loving relationship between two men is so well captured I was enthralled from beginning to end.

Engrossing. Perfect combination of brutal British schoolboy hijinks with the fireworks (or shell bursts) of adolescent love, set against nothing less than the viscerally (literally) obscene violence of World War I. Maybe the prison hijinks went on a bit too long but it was a much needed relief from the stomach-turning horror of the trenches. Who in the world decided teenage boys automatically qualified to be military officers? Oh, right. Brilliant literary device also that makes the reader more of an active participant than expected. Read it in two days, will read again.
