Thomas Hobbes kann mit recht als Begründer der englischsprachigen Philosophie genannt werden. Fasziniert von wissenschaftlicher Exaktheit der mathematischen Methode, suchte Hobbes in der Geometrie und Mathematik Antworten auf philosophische Fragen. Eine innere Ordnung seiner Philosophie stellt sich in einem Fortschreiten seiner Werke, angefangen bei der Physik (De corpore), über die Anthropologie (De homine), bis hin zu seiner Staatslehre (De cive; Leviathan) dar. Auch in Leviathan kann diese innere Ordnung festgestellt werden. Hobbes konstruiert seine Theorie auf Basis persönlicher Erfahrungen und Reflektionen dieser. Er stellt gesetzesartige Prinzipien auf, die ihre Grundlage auf wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen bilden. Sinnliche Erfahrungen werden bei Hobbes als Reaktion auf äußere Reize angesehen und Hobbes’ Menschenbild spiegelt sein Interesse an der Naturwissenschaft wieder. Diesesmechanische oder naturwissenschaftliche Menschenbild überträgt er auf seine Staats- und Gesellschaftslehre. Im Folgenden wird der Frage nachgehen, ob die im Leviathan dargelegte Staatsphilosophie von der des Aristoteles zu unterscheiden ist, oder ob es sich hierbei um eine bloße Kopie antiken Gedankenguts handelt, mit Beschränkung auf einige wenige Merkmale. Anschließend wird hinterfragt, ob der Staat als notwendig angesehen werden muss.
