Angela Davis nasceu em 1944 em Birmingham, no Alabama ao sul dos Estados Unidos, e é uma das figuras mais carismáticas do movimento estadunidense pela defesa e a promoção dos direitos civis. Dedicou a vida para a luta contra o racismo e a desigualdade, para a causa feminista, à paz e à melhora das condições dos detentos nas prisões dos Estados Unidos.
Angela era adolescente quando começou a se questionar "Por que, para os irmãos negros, sempre há um lado certo e um lado errado da rua para morar? Por que os irmãos negros ainda buscam agradar aos brancos, em vez de lutar contra quem lhes domina e oprime?". Ela começou a ter tais questionamentos quando a Ku Klux Klan semeava bombas diante das casas das famílias negras no bairro "Dynamite Hill" em Birmingham, Alabama, para obrigá-las a irem embora para outro lugar. Hoje, setenta anos mais tarde, o caminho corajoso de luta e contestação de Davis ainda não terminou.
