Berlin in den 1990er Jahren - nach dem Fall der Mauer lebt ein blinder Dichter, der sich in die Heimleiterin des Blindenvereins verliebt und sie schließlich heiratet. In seiner Vorstellung ist seine Frau eine Schönheit, welche er in seinen Gedichten mit jener Helenas gleichsetzt. Durch Zufall hört er das Gespräch zweier Frauen, die seine Frau als die hässlichste der Welt beschreiben. Eine Welt der Illusionen stürzt für ihn zusammen. Er fühlt sich als betrogen.
Nach vielen Irrungen in die Tiefen seiner Seele führt ihn sein Weg nach Weimar. Der blinde Dichter wird zu einem sehenden, der die Welt hinter den Illusionen erschaut hat.
Dieser Roman nimmt es sicherlich mit den spannendsten Romanen unserer Zeit auf und fügt ihm außerdem eine dichterische Dimension hinzu, die heutzutage nur noch sehr selten in der erzählenden Literatur anzutreffen ist.
