Vikingernes fremragende skibe bragte dem til De Britiske Øer og Vesteuropa og videre til Middelhavet. Nordpå opbyggede de nye samfund på Færøerne og i Island og Grønland og besøgte Amerika, mens de østover opererede langs Østersøen og de store russiske floder og nåede helt til Byzans. Med afsæt i arkæologiske fund og nedskrevne historier fra vikingernes vide verden tegner bogen et billede af deres bedrifter ude og hjemme, og hvem de egentlig var.
