Este libro analiza 250 años de historia económica y social de Gran Bretaña: el origen de la Revolución Industrial, su papel pionero en la economía mundial, los industriales y los productores de materias primas, las metrópolis y las zonas coloniales o semicoloniales del mundo entero, y su posterior decadencia durante el siglo XX debida a su temprana eclosión como potencia industrial mundial. Sin embargo, no es posible comprender la historia de Gran Bretaña si no se tiene en cuenta su papel como eje de aquel vasto imperio sobre el que se asentaron sus fortunas durante tanto tiempo, su posterior decadencia ante el empuje de nuevas potencias económicas –Estados Unidos y Japón- o, sus actuales relaciones con la Unión Europea.
Al analizar este complejo entramado de relaciones comerciales y de producción, el profesor Hobsbawm no solo nos ofrece la mejor historia económica y social de Gran Bretaña desde 1750 hasta hoy, sino que nos está explicando toda la historia económica occidental moderna.
