Auszug: Es ist sieben Uhr an einem lieblichen Sommermorgen. Heraus aus dem Bett und einen Blick aus dem Fenster! Es ist eine Schande noch im Bette zu liegen, wenn die Sonne so hell scheint, die Vögel singen und die Bienen von Blume zu Blume fliegen. Warum sind die Bienen so früh bei der Arbeit? Sie sammeln den gelben Blütenstaub, der beim Kriechen in die Blüten an ihren behaarten Körpern hängen geblieben ist, und mit Hilfe der Beine bürsten sie ihn ab und ballen ihn zu kleinen Kügelchen zusammen. Dann packen sie diese in eine Rinne an ihren Hinterbeinen und fliegen nach dem Bienenstock. Dort vermischen sie den Blütenstaub mit Honig und machen Bienenbrot daraus; damit füttern sie die jungen Bienen. Sieh, wie geschäftig der Specht da unter der Ulme ist! Er fängt Insekten, die er nach Hause zu seinen Kleinen trägt, welche seit mehr als einer Woche ausgebrütet sind. Weiter weg im Felde kämpft eine Drossel mit einem großen Wurm; auch sie besorgt wohl ein Frühstück für ihre Familie. Wie fleißig sie alle sind, und du liegst noch im Bette! Wenn ich an deiner Stelle wäre, so würde ich aufstehen und Unkraut im Garten ausjäten. So kannst du dich nützlich machen und zugleich viel Interessantes lernen, während du bei der Arbeit bist Hier ist ein Unkraut, das zwischen den Kohlköpfen wächst. Kennst du seinen Namen? Es wird Hirtentäschelkraut genannt wegen seiner sonderbaren Samenschoten. Sie wachsen auf Stielen aus dem Stamme der Pflanze unter den kleinen weißen Blüten. Wenn eine davon vorsichtig geöffnet wird, findet man an jeder Seite eine kleine Tasche, die sich von der Mitte losreißen läßt, wenn die Schote reif ist. Die Samen bleiben dann an der schmalen Scheidewand haften.
