Aubrey Beardsley by Patrick Bade Book Summary
Né en 1872, Aubrey Beardsley fut, avec Oscar Wilde, une figure emblématique de la décadence qui marqua la fin du règne de la reine Victoria. Largement autodidacte, Beardsley témoigne d’abord dans ses dessins de l’influence des Préraphaélites, comme Burne-Jones et Rossetti. Par la suite, il adopte un style plus radical et novateur, en illustrant Le Morte d'Arthur de Sir Thomas Malory et participe à la création de la revue The Yellow Book. Mais c’est à travers ses dessins sombres et érotiques, notamment pour Salomé d’Oscar Wilde, qu’il évoqua au mieux l’atmosphère trouble de l’époque. Atteint de tuberculose, Beardsley connut une mort prématurée à l’âge de 25 ans. Il laissa derrière lui de nombreuses illustrations, qui eurent une grande influence sur les artistes de l’Art Nouveau. Servi par une mise en page originale, Patrick Bade explore ici l’univers équivoque de Beardsley, artiste "fin de siècle" par excellence. A travers des illustrations qui choquèrent ses contemporains, le dessinateur défia hardiment la morale victorienne, pour devenir un témoin privilégié de son époque.
