Orson Welles' frühes Meisterwerk "Citizen Kane" gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Filme der Kinogeschichte. Vom American Film Institute mehrfach als 'bester Film aller Zeiten' gelistet, gilt er in vielerlei Hinsicht als cineastischer Bahnbrecher.
Die multiperspektivisch in Rückblenden und unter Einsatz von raffinerten Stilmitteln wie der Tiefenschärfe erzählte Geschichte von "Citizen Kane" handelt von einem auf der Suche nach dem verlorenen Kindheitsglück Scheiternden. Darin seinem Protagonisten in "Citizen Kane" nicht unähnlich, misslang auch der Versuch des Regisseurs Orson Welles, an diesen vielversprechenden Auftakt anzuschließen und ein entsprechendes filmisches Œuvre zu schaffen: Andauernde Finanzierungsprobleme und organisatorische Rückschläge sorgten dafür, dass viele von Welles' Projekten unverwirklicht oder unvollendet blieben bzw. seiner künstlerischen Kontrolle entzogen wurden. All dies lässt "Citizen Kane", den der Regisseur vollkommen gemäß seinen Vorstellungen vorlegen konnte, eine Sonderstellung im Werk von Welles einnehmen. Der Band fokussiert sich daher – aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive – auf dieses Meisterwerk der Filmgeschichte.
