Después de analizar los precios de cientos de productos básicos, bienes y servicios a lo largo de dos siglos, los profesores Gale Pooley y Marian Tupy descubrieron que los recursos se volvían más abundantes a medida que crecía la población. Los autores también encontraron que la abundancia de recursos aumentó más rápido que la población, una relación que ellos llaman «superabundancia».
El libro expone que cada ser humano adicional creó, en promedio, más valor del que consumió. Esto es posible porque más personas producen más ideas, lo que lleva a más innovaciones. Al final del proceso de descubrimiento y selección en el mercado, sobreviven aquellas invenciones que permiten superar la escasez, estimular el crecimiento económico y elevar el nivel de vida.
Para poder innovar y alimentar el ciclo de la superabundancia se debe permitir que las personas piensen, hablen, publiquen, se asocien y estén en desacuerdo. Se les debe permitir ahorrar, invertir, comerciar y obtener beneficios. Por eso, este ensayo, desconcertante y optimista, pero no ingenuo, es ante todo una defensa de la libertad.
