Dieses Büchlein dient als Einführung in das Leben und Werk von Teresa von Avila (1515-1582), dieser außergewöhnlichen spanischen Frau aus dem 16. Jh. Sie war Ordensreformerin und gründete den Zweig der Unbeschuhten Karmeliten, war Mystikerin, Schriftstellerin und Seelenführerin. Mit Johannes vom Kreuz gründete sie den Männerzweig. In Pater Jerónimo Gracián fand sie einen engen Freund und Gleichgesinnten. Sie musste viele Widerstände bei den Klostergründungen und den Streit zwischen den Beschuhten und Unbeschuhten Karmeliten erleben, bis zwei Jahre vor ihrem Tod der Reformorden endlich von Rom anerkannt und vom ursprünglichen Orden unabhängig wurde. Sie gründete siebzehn Frauen- und zwei Männerklöster in ganz Spanien.
