Le livre VI des Carmina de Michel de L’Hospital comprend treize épîtres hexamétriques composées entre 1562 et 1572, soit du début des guerres de religion au seuil de la Saint-Barthélemy. Deux épîtres sont adressées au cardinal de Lorraine et marquent la fin de la relation entre les deux hommes ; huit autres sont adressées à des serviteurs du roi (De Thou, Pibrac, Du Ferrier, Du Faur), à des juristes (Vacca) et à des philologues (Turnèbe, Corbinelli) ; enfin, trois sont dépourvues de destinataire précis. L’Hospital développe de profondes réflexions politiques, philosophiques, littéraires et religieuses. En sage observateur de son époque, dont il déplore les vices, il laisse une place de plus en plus ample à son idéal éthique et évangélique. La disgrâce du chancelier en 1568 nourrit une méditation sur la vieillesse et le salut. La mise en scène de la violence, physique ou verbale, offre au lecteur un miroir pour notre temps.
L’édition fournit le texte latin établi sur les manuscrits collationnés avec les éditions imprimées de 1558 et 1732, une nouvelle traduction, en stiques, une présentation du contexte, une analyse et un commentaire. Le volume est complété d’une introduction, d’un index des lieux, des personnes et des matières.
