Von dort reist sie, nach einer ersten Einstimmung auf indische Kultur und Lebensweise in dem von englischer Kolonialherrschft geprägten Stadtteil Colaba, mit dem Zug in einer anderthalbtägigen Fahrt nach Varanasi, erkundet per Fahrradrikscha eine der heiligsten Stätten der Menschen hinduistischen Glaubens, wohnt Segnungszeremonien an den Ufern des Ganges bei und lässt sich von dem Geschehen an den Ghats, aber auch von den Seidenstoffen, für die diese Stadt berühmt ist, faszinieren. Eine abenteuerliche Fahrt in einem geländegängigen Sammeltaxi bringt sie nach Sikkim, wo sie beeindruckt von den Schneegipfeln des östlichen Himalayas Wanderungen in der Umgebung Gangtoks unternimmt, zum ersten Mal eine buddhistische Tempelanlage betritt, für sie die Nähe Tibets spürbar wird und die Freundschaft mit einer Inderin beginnt. Nach einem Aufenthalt in der einstigen hill-station Darjeeling kehrt sie, wieder mit dem Zug, über Kolkata nach Mumbai zurück.
