The Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger Book Summary

Sparkling and sophisticated, this sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking debut novel tells the story of a very messy, very high-profile divorce and the endearingly cynical young lawyer dragooned into handling it.

Twenty-nine-year-old Sophie Diehl is happy toiling away as a criminal law associate at an old-line New England firm, where she very much appreciates that most of her clients are trapped behind bars. Everyone at Traynor, Hand knows she abhors face-to-face contact, but one week, with all the big partners out of town, Sophie is stuck handling the intake interview for the daughter of the firm’s most important client.

After eighteen years of marriage, Mayflower descendant Mia Meiklejohn Durkheim has just been served divorce papers in a humiliating scene at the popular local restaurant, Golightly’s. Mia is now locked and loaded to fight her eminent and ambitious husband, Dr. Daniel Durkheim, Chief of the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Mather Medical School, for custody of their ten-year-old daughter Jane. Mia also burns to take him down a peg. Sophie warns Mia that she’s never handled a divorce case before, but Mia can’t be put off. The way she sees it, it’s her first divorce, too. For Sophie, the whole affair will spark a hard look at her own relationships—with her parents, colleagues, friends, lovers, and, most important, herself.

A rich, layered novel told entirely through personal correspondence, office memos, e-mails, articles, handwritten notes, and legal documents, The Divorce Papers offers a direct window into the lives of an entertaining cast of characters never shy about speaking their minds. Original and captivating, Susan Rieger’s brilliantly conceived and expertly crafted debut races along with wit, heartache, and exceptional comedic timing, as it explores the complicated family dynamic that results when marriage fails—as well as the ever-present risks and coveted rewards of that thing called love.

Great book. I downloaded thinking it would be a good read while on the road. It was! I went snooping for more books by this author and wasn't disappointed😀

Charming and Smooth. I thought this book was a lovely way to pass the day. I found it witty and touching. I enjoyed the various formats, and if I skipped over the legal documents, I knew the salient points would be summed up in the next email or memo. Don't let the fussy, bad reviews dissuade you; it's quite a nice book.

The Divorce Papers. This is a truly horrible book. I kept reading in hopes of finding something valuable-lessons learned or some humor. But alas, no. It was at least 50% legal briefs. This is not a book!

Not bad, not great. After reading all of the reviews, I was expecting a little more from this book. I find that it dragged on quite a bit.. The characters were great and some of the parts of the book were funny.

The Divorce Papers. Not a bad read but the style in which it is written made it difficult to become engaged with the characters.

Outstanding novel. I'm so grateful that iBooks had this on their "we recommend for March" reading list. And I'd forgotten the delightful, almost voyeuristic experience that comes from reading REAL letters and correspondence. "Epistolary" sounds too religious in tone and this book marries humor with pathos. Great character development and multiple story lines. Nothing pretentious or inaccessible. Read it!!!

Horrible. This isn't a book. It's horrible. Pages of correspondence surrounding a divorce does not a book make. Don't waste your money!!!!!!

Fun read. Loved this book and couldn't stop reading. The author nails what it is like to handle a divorce and the politics of a law firm, in a fresh approach. Laughed every time the client's story evolved, and appreciated the style of the book more at each stage. It's a shame some of the earlier reviewers did not.

Verbose. I wanted to like this book. Same divorce situation, in 2014 terms. Some great little nuggets, but mostly the viewpoints of the attorney's. However, the self explorations though exhausting memo's, email and legal documents (attorney 's and client's) left me glad 1. That I did not waste my time and money on this sort of thing, and 2. I have an e-reader that can fast forward to a non-ending.

The Divorce Papers. Best book I have read in some time. Loved it and will recommend it to everyone.

Wonderful!. The Divorce Papers was the first book I read on my iPad. Loved the book and reading it on my iPad. The novel read as though I had a front row seat in the theater of the main character's thoughts. I loved the epistolary form. The letters, notes and briefs lent such authority to the information presented in the novel. Even though a work of fiction, I feel so educated about divorce. And who among us has not dealt with divorce!

Divorce papers fun-yes!. Told through the paper trail associated and adjacent to a divorce process, what might be assumed to be dry or too legalistic is in fact a romp through how the well-to-do can screw each other over and the satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) the law can give. A great read that makes some lawyers likeable, some pediatric oncologists detestable and some 11-year olds both negotiable and negotiator. A story even the happily married will enjoy.

Quick and interesting. I felt like I was cc'd on all the emails and briefs. I found a lot of the legal papers interesting and skipped the ones I did not.

6 stars if I could. As a retired NYC divorce attorney,I relived every moment of Sophie's trials and tribulations. The book was amazingly accurate, except in real life there weren't so many laughs. It just confirmed to me the wisdom of leaving the practice and retiring early. If enough lay people read it , the divorce rate in this country would be cut in half!

The Divorce Papers. I know nothing about divorce, and thought it could be depressing - but I LOVED this book! It has plenty of humor and some sadness (kid involved), but I could not put it down. Loved reading all the documents, too. Clever and interesting!

Enjoyed it immensely!. I was looking for something light to read and stumbled on to a thoroughly stimulating, epistolary novel. Can't recommend it highly enough.

The divorce appears. Loved it. Fun, easy read. Interesting way to tell the story of a divorce.

Entertaining lesson. As someone who's been fortunate to have never had intimate contact with divorce, this book was a real eye opener. I now feel at least somewhat familiar with process and some of the pitfalls that can arise. It was also a nice surprise how much I enjoyed the writing style. I was a bit skeptical at first but it was a great way of bringing different points of view into play about the various story lines.

The divorce papers. This book is very little, almost nothing, like the store's blurb. It is not funny. It is not a romantic comedy. There are so many pages you can just skip but it was still such a long book. Mine would also start a new chapter mid-sentence. I doubt what was lost would make a big difference.
