A görög Trója-mondakör hősnőjéről, Iphigeneiáról szóló tragédiáját Goethe több forrásból, de elsősorban Euripidész művét alapul véve fogalmazta újra, először 1779-ben. Igen hamar be is mutatták Weimarban, ahol is Oresztész szerepét maga a költő alakította. Ezután többször is átdolgozta; végső formáját csak 1786-ban kapta meg, immár római tartózkodása alatt. Ez a változat a korábbi zaklatott szenvedély helyett klasszikus nyugalmat áraszt.
A Torquato Tasso szintén Goethe itáliai éveihez köthető, amennyiben itt érett be a régen dédelgetett téma, végül 1788–89-ben készült el a teljes mű, több részletben – furcsa módon előbb a negyedik felvonás, utoljára az első. A költőfejedelem személyes sértődöttsége átsüt a saját sorsát Tasso hányattatásaival párhuzamba állító drámai költemény egészén.
Míg az Iphigenia Tauriszban igen gyakran játszott, népszerű színdarab, a Tasso szinte előadhatatlan, csak elvétve találkozhatunk vele színházaink repertoárján
