En este libro, los personajes de Krauze no son los hombres del poder sino los del saber. Construido como un texto polifónico, el libro aborda los temas fundacionales de la historia mexicana (el mundo prehispánico, la Conquista, el Virreinato) y alrededor de ellos estudia la actitud histórica de varios historiadores y escritores que vivieron el turbulento siglo xix.
En estas páginas los hombres se encuentran en permanente tensión creativa, entre el presente y el pasado: Manuel Orozco y Berra, Joaquín García Icazbalceta, José Fernando Ramírez, Lucas Alamán, Ignacio Ramírez, Ignacio M. Altamirano, Justo Sierra, Vicente Riva Palacio. Estos autores, aunque diferentes en sus posturas, creyeron en mayor o menor medida en la necesidad de investigar, conservar y trasmitir la memoria mexicana, instaurar una permanente y casi religiosa presencia del pasado.
