På ett hustak i en raserad och öde stad i norra Irak hukar en grupp amerikanska soldater i väntan på att striderna ska sätta igång på nytt. Bland dem finns den tjugoettårige Bart och den tre år yngre Murph. Tillsammans delar de krigets leda och fasor. Han plågas av mardrömslika minnen, av andras försök att göra honom till hjälte och av löftet han gav till Murphs mamma innan bataljonen klev ombord på planet till Irak – ett löfte han inte kunde hålla.
