Great Civil War Book. I thought this book was great for learning more about the Civil War. I had a somewhat hard time following some of the battles, but that could just be from my complete lack of military strategy competence. Overall, it's a great book about the Civil War and I would recommend it if you're interested in that particular time.

Solid narrative with links to in-depth material. I was initially skeptical of such a slender volume on such a large topic, but Catton and McPherson are both eminent civil war authors, so I started reading. The authors produce a compelling and thoughtful narrative that covers all aspects of the war: military, political, economic, and psychological. It will reward newcomers to the topic the most, but even aficionados will find value in it. Depth of detail is impossible, but the authors provide live links to a wealth of online information providing as much detail as most readers will desire, cleverly knit within a well-organized story line.

American Heritage History Of the Civil War. On one level this book is an excellent overview of the Civil War. I gained a powerful appreciation of the significance of the war to our country's history. Because it does such a good job of providing an overview, I was left feeling that I wanted even more detail and background, especially in the political realm, that this volume did not provide. Again on the plus side, reading this book has energized me to read more by this author and by other Civil War historians.

Great. For a non American the battle locations are a challenge, not having a knowledge of the Country. Nevertheless the story is one for the world. It reads as though the story is contemporary and the battles just an ocean away. As always poisonous politics present before and after every upheaval. President Lincoln is the Father of modern America and most deservedly so.

Nailed it. Authors Both the author and the dude who wrote the intro are American, and Pulitzer Prize winning historians. Nuff said. I'm a civil war tragic, the only thing I have in common with Kim Beazley. Summary The American Civil War was a nasty business that went down in the mid-nineteenth century, and is still going on in some places. For the uninitiated, the conflagration was about States' rights not abolishing slavery. Yeah, right. More than 620,000 (2% of the population at the time) died in the line of duty. Cumulative American losses in foreign wars did not eclipse that number until around 1980. The number of books written about the War Between the States, as it is still called south of the Mason-Dixon line, approaches that total too, I believe. I've read 20+ of them. Most were very long and very boring. Writing Eminently readable and succinct, splicing the politics and the battlefield action nicely. Bottom line The shortest tome I've read on the subject, and probably the best too. Footnotes 1. Lincoln, a Republican, was inaugurated as war broke out, having lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College just like @realDonaldTrump, who reckons he's got it harder than the tall guy with the chimney stack hat. 2. Actually, I'm surprised the Donald hasn't claimed he would have brokered a deal if he'd been alive at the time of the Civil War. Maybe he has. 3. I wish he had been alive back then. We wouldn't have to put up with him now.
