La Malhora ocupa un lugar especialísimo entre las novelas de Mariano Azuela (1873-1952). El manuscrito de esta novela corta, admirada incondicionalmente en el extranjero, probó suerte en un certamen literario local cuyo jurado decidió inopinadamente declarar desierto el primer y único premio. Escrita al comienzo de la década de los 1920, cuando Azuela vivía y trabajaba en las entrañas mismas de los bajos fondos de la capital del país revolucionado, su trama devuelve la historia de Altagracia, llamada por mal nombre "La Malhora", una muchacha nacida en los estercoleros de la urbe y madurada a golpes entre hampones. Esta novela no solo señaló el comienzo de un ciclo distinto en la obra de Azuela —siendo el anterior el que se asocia a las orbitas de su novela más conocida, Los de abajo—, sino que en ella no escatimó riesgos formales de gran audacia para retratar la vida de una población absolutamente novedosa en la gran ciudad.
