Optique by Isaac Newton Book Summary
D’un ensemble d’expériences, menées en 1665-1666, s’inscrivant dans le prolongement de celles de ses contemporains, Newton parvient à formuler une nouvelle hypothèse portant sur la lumière blanche : la lumière est un mélange hétérogène de rayons différemment réfrangibles provoquant des sensations de couleurs différentes.
Cette hypothèse, introduisant le concept de lumière monochromatique, conduit Newton, en s’appuyant sur l’expérience du prisme, à reconstruire toute la théorie des phénomènes de la couleur.
Dans l’Optique de 1704 il donne, sous une forme ordonnée, la première théorie mathématique des phénomènes de la couleur : de l’arc-en-ciel aux lames minces en passant par les couleurs des corps et la diffraction.
