John Steinbeck (1902-1968) er en av de største amerikanske forfatterne fra det 20. århundre. Han vant Pulitzerprisen for romanen Vredens druer i 1940, og er også kjent for verkene Øst for Eden, Dagdrivergjengen og Om mus og menn. Det litterære virket hans, som omfatter 27 bøker, gav ham Nobelprisen i litteratur i 1962.
I Mexico, i nærheten av Mexicogolfen, lever perlefiskeren Kino en fattig, men forholdsvis lykkelig tilværelse sammen med konen Juana og den vesle sønnen deres Coyotito. En skjebnesvanger dag blir Coyotito stukket av en skorpion, og foreldrene hans tar ham med til byen slik at han kan bli undersøkt av en lege. Legen lar dem i klare vendinger få vite at behandlingen hans ikke er gratis og at det egentlig er under hans verdighet å behandle et indianerbarn. Samme dag finner Kino en kjempestor og kostbar perle som vekker håp om økonomisk trygghet og et bedre liv for den lille familien. Nyheten om Kinos funn sprer seg som ild i tørt gress i den lille byen, der den vekker misunnelse og begjær. Kino innser at det gjelder å få solgt perlen så fort som mulig, men det skal vise seg å være lettere sagt enn gjort.
Steinbeck skrev Perlen, som ofte blir beskrevet som en lignelse, på bakgrunn av et mexicansk folkeeventyr han hadde hørt under et besøk i La Paz. Fortellingen ble utgitt i 1947 og høstet gode anmeldelser. Siden den gang har den blitt en klassiker som ofte er å finne på videregåendepensumet. Steinbeck skrev at han med Perlen ønsket å sette fokus på “menneskelig grådighet, materialisme og den iboende verdien av en gjenstand.”
