Hvor mange ved, at den franske impressionismes vugge var dansk og stod på Sankt Thomas i Dansk Vestindien? Maleren Camille Pissarro begyndte livet som Jacobo Pizzarro i en dansk-jødisk familie, der havde søgt tilflugt for jødeforfølgelserne på Sankt Thomas. Her bliver hans mor, Rachel, som er en usædvanlig karakterfast kvinde, tvunget til at gifte sig med en ældre mand. Da manden pludselig dør, bliver en ganske ung fransk slægtning hentet til øen. Rachel falder for ham, og det lidenskabelige forhold resulterer blandt andet i sønnen Jacobo. Jacobo viser tidligt kunstneriske evner og bliver som 12-årig sendt til Paris for at lære at male. Efter hjemkomsten nægter han at gå ind i familiens firma og stifter i stedet bekendtskab med den danske guldaldermaler Fritz Melbye, der er på rundrejse. I 1853 sejler de sammen til Venezuela, hvor de bliver i to år. Herfra fortsætter Camille (som han nu kalder sig) til Paris. Frodigheden, varmen og skønheden på Sankt Thomas danner baggrund og en magisk atmosfære lige så farverig som et impressionistisk maleri og så levende som de skildpadder, der én nat om året kryber op på stranden for at lægge deres æg.
