The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen Book Summary

"Katniss Everdeen, you have competition."—Entertainment Weekly

In the final volume of the the New York Times bestselling Tearling trilogy, which has captivated readers around the world, Erika Johansen brings the series to a climactic and satisfying close.

In less than a year, Kelsea Glynn has transformed from a gawky teenager into a powerful monarch. As she has come into her own as the Queen of the Tearling, the headstrong, visionary leader has also transformed her realm. In her quest to end corruption and restore justice, she has made many enemies—including the evil Red Queen, her fiercest rival, who has set her armies against the Tear.

To protect her people from a devastating invasion, Kelsea did the unthinkable—she gave herself and her magical sapphires to her enemy, and named the Mace, the trusted head of the Queen’s Guard, as Regent in her place. The Mace will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign, imprisoned and imperiled in Mortmesne. While they embark on this dangerous mission, Kelsea must unravel the secrets of her own heritage and of the Tearling’s past, secrets with stakes far higher than she could ever have imagined. But a powerful new enemy stands in her way. Bolstered by anger from the past and growing stronger by the day, he’ll stop at nothing to destroy anyone who challenges his claim.

Now, as the suspenseful endgame begins, the fate of Queen Kelsea—and of the Tearling itself—will finally be revealed.

Disappointing Conclusion to the series. I was so eager to read the 3rd installment that I decided to reread the first two books to refresh my memory. Must say I loved both books as much the 2nd time around. "Fate",however, disappointed. The conclusion was the most disappointing. I believe the author missed an opportunity here ..... Writing to meet a deadline versus taking the time to write a good story. In all three books each chapter is headed by a pre or post crossing writing....many of which are about The Glynn Queen and long after her reign.....I read those as clues to the furture of The Tearling and suspect that was the authors intent until taking the easy out of rewriting history. As such, none of the post crossing writing could ever have been written. The author thanks her editing team but really I believe this was a major oversight.

What the whatting what?!. The three stars are sympathy stars. I loved the first two books, well done. Exciting, interesting, great stories! And I loved this one too, right up until the end. Why?!!!! Seriously? You just erased it all?!! Such a cop out! :(

Gripping to the very end!. Such a great read! All the books stole my attention from real life. I couldn’t stop reading! Thank you for such a beautiful series of books ❤️

Disappointing end. Each book in this series reads like a different genre. The first novel is pure fantasy, the second more dystopian sci-fi, and this conclusion reads in places more like horror then anything else. Ultimately this leads to the novel's failure as the author writes herself into a corner, creates a literal dues-ex-machina to resolve the plot (in a way that's very unsatisfactory), and gives up on two novels worth of foreshadowing for one of the weakest happy endings I've ever seen. Also, The mystery of the main character's father was wrapped up in a way that made me wonder why they'd made a big deal of it in the first place, the happy ending hinges on the death of a single person in the past fixing all of the present, and the happy ending doesn't even make sense once you think about it for a couple of minutes. All in all it was a very disappointing end to a promising series and I almost wish I never read it.

Certainly not a neat ending.... I just finished the Tearling series and found the final book to be lacking. I was left wanting more...

I'm in shock: ending feels like she was on a deadline. This series was so awesome up until I realized that there weren't enough pages to conclude it. Even in the LAST PAGES Kelsea is so upset she's considering reversing everything she just did to save her kingdom but then she just completely changed her mind in a paragraph. I thought at least there's be some passage of time like *2 years later* Kelsea realizes she can be whoever she wants but IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH?! Also I still don't get why Kelsea killed Jonathan when she pops out of Katie. I was completely fine with everything that happened up until I realized Erika just concluded the entire series IN ONE PARAGRAPH. This isn't game of thrones!! The ending feels like how I write when I have a paper due at midnight and it's 11:58 but I still don't have a conclusion.

Better ending. I wish the ending was better

"My magic system works because I say it does". Spoilers ahead. I was so very disappointed in this book. I enjoyed the first two and the world the author was building. I was waiting for the explanations of her magic system. Nope. None there. The ending is rushed and feels wrong. Still many characters I enjoyed but not enough to rate this book higher. Read it just to finish the series.

Tough ending to a complex series. Not sure how I feel about this being the final book…so in retrospect this ended exactly how Tear saw from the beginning and nothing as you would expect from a readers standpoint.

Disappointed :(. I was really stunned at the turn in the second and third books - such an open contempt for religion. Wow. It seemed the author’s vision for a socialist utopian circumvented the need to leave the reader with a more satisfying conclusion for the characters we loved. But this is just my opinion, of course.

Oh. My. Gosh.. I thought I was upset with the Allegiant ending, but this was nothing in comparison. I was so In love with this book, so much better than the second one had been. But I feel like the author reached the end of the book and just quit. I am so so so upset with this ending (I won't say spoilers) and I feel very cheated. I wasted time and energy and emotions on this story. If this is the last book of the series, which it does NOT have to be, I will feel the series and author redeemed. Otherwise, this sucked and I will never reread what had started to become my favorite series.

Good, but not Great. I really loved the first two books of the trilogy. I was really looking forward to the final chapter. Unfortunately, like a lot of trilogies, the third installment just does not hold up. Overall, I still like the series, but I felt the third book was rushed and the ending perhaps not as thought-out as I would have liked. Still a worthy read if you invested in the first two books.

Thank you..... A captivating and brilliantly crafted conclusion to a wonderful series. I couldn't have asked for a more satisfying end to the Glynn Queen's story.

A great ending. A enjoyable journey. Ending was great and wrapped it up nicely. Totally had tears in my eyes.

A cautionary tale in the shadow of Trump's victory. As I read this trilogy, and especially this final book, I became aware of the parallels between the history of the world of the Tear and our own real world...and I feel both recognition in the truth of the author's words and visions, and tremendous fear of that truth. If only Kelsea could restart our own world! If only.... This is a riveting story, and it has the added punch of truly making you think - even as you are feverishly turning pages while the action and twists pull you inexorably along.

Worst Ending Ever. Save yourself the trouble of reading this series. It felt like the Author paints herself into a corner and can’t get out using a plausible storyline.

A Masterpiece-Wonderful Book!. First let me reply to the first review comment above - the ending to this book is amazing! It is nothing - absolutely nothing like the ending in Allegiant. I am going through this book a couple more times because I loved it so much. I had to wait 10 months to get my hands on this - I always listen to the audiobook versions of books nowadays- and it was incredible. I only take time out for the best books. This book resolved everything and I loved the twists, turns and the evolution of the Glynn Queen. This book was just so special and the very best of the Tearling trilogy.

Beautiful and Devastating. So well written. Multiple story lines that tie in seamlessly. The ultimate sacrifice that you don’t really see coming and that hurts in a different you expect because you grow so attached to every character. It’s not only kelsea who loses everything and everyone in the story, but you as well. The author did an amazing job and I cannot stop crying

Disappointing.. The ending ruined it for me. I felt like the author was trying to teach readers a lesson. That life is hard. Get over yourself. Deal. Move on. It was an easy way for the writer to end it. Didn’t have to close any of the story lines. Sad.
