The Irish Cottage: Finding Elizabeth

The Irish Cottage: Finding Elizabeth by Juliet Gauvin Book Summary

A story about losing your way and finding your life. Book 1 of 3.

Elizabeth Lara built a perfect life as San Francisco’s top divorce attorney, but when she loses her great-aunt Mags, the woman who raised her, she boards a plane and leaves it all behind.

The Irish shores welcome her as she learns a shocking truth, kept secret for thirty-five years. Devastated and now alone in the world, Beth tries to find peace in a beautiful cottage by Lough Rhiannon, but peace isn’t what fate had in mind. Almost as soon as she arrives, Beth’s solitary retreat into the magic wilds of Ireland is interrupted by Connor Bannon. A man with light brown hair, ice blue eyes and a secret of his own. He’s gorgeous, grieving, and completely unexpected.

With the help of Mags’ letters, the colorful townspeople of Dingle, and Connor, Elizabeth might just find a way back to the girl she lost long ago and become the woman she always wanted to be.

A Note From Jules:

Be forewarned you might not want to start this book late at night—several readers have reported “gobbling it up” and going on to the next book immediately. This book is literary women’s fiction, it is not a traditional romance, per se.

It’s a trilogy, not a standalone. All three books are vital to the story: The Irish Cottage, The London Flat, and The Paris Apartment. That being said, I’ve found that traditional romance readers are VERY happy at the end of London. So take a ride with me, first to Ireland and then the world.

“If you enjoy Nora Roberts, you’ll like Juliet Gauvin. The Irish Cottage is a fresh take on women’s literary fiction, sometimes light and scrumptious and other times quite profound in its observations on life, love and loss.”

“A book that conveys the true feelings of Ireland when you visit…it’s a bit of a romance, history, travel, and mystery neatly tied into a book well worth reading.”

“It will give you the feels—only the good ones!”

The Irish Cottage: Finding Elizabeth is an international women’s literary fiction romance novel with three books in the novel series. Other themes include: romance literary fiction, women’s sagas, love stories, and second chances at life.

“It was like a drug that I couldn’t get enough of. The Irish Cottage started it all and now that I have finished all three, I’m starting all over.” -Amazon Reviewer

"I started this book and couldn't put it down. It brought me to Ireland and I never wanted to leave." -Amazon Reviewer

"There is so much to love in this, the first in the [The Irish Heart] Series...I wanted to look out my cottage window and see a Lough of my own and the pub was just asking me to come visit...This story pulled me in from the very first page and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, stories of starting over, or romances set in other countries." -Goodreads

"Picked this up because it was set in Ireland, and it took me right back there. Wonderful writer, if you love Ireland and a good read I would recommend this book. I will most definitely be reading the rest of the series." -Amazon Reviewer

“I laughed, I cried, I hoped & dreamed. The series was beautifully told through poignant letters. A keeper of the heart.” -Amazon Reviewer

"Excellent book, one that was very hard to put down. Well-written, exciting, great author! I highly recommend this book to all...Get it then get comfortable because you will be in for a good long read, enjoy!" -Goodreads

"Great book! Elizabeth embodies strength and determination as well as compassion and forgiveness. The Irish Cottage combines the fairytale of Ireland with the real life struggles we all face." -Amazon Reviewer

"I bought the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. Very romantic, very sexy, with a heroine who can save her own bacon...and the wounded, hunky hero--be still my heart." -Goodreads

Q: How did you come up with The Irish Cottage?
Jules: Well the story came together in pieces. I love Ireland, I've always been attracted to the country, the people, the music, the dancing. I've spent time traveling the country so I knew I wanted to set the book there. And then the character of Elizabeth was based on a lot of the experiences I had when I was in law in San Francisco. When I was immersed in that world--it was a very dark time, and I really did lose my way--like Elizabeth. I even let long-time relationships die because I was in such a dark place, it was difficult to see anything past my own nose. So yeah, I knew I wanted my heroine to be a "recovering attorney" and I knew that I wanted her to have this great love affair in Ireland that would open her up to the truly great possibilities life has to offer.

Q: And what about Connor Bannon? Is he based on anyone?
Jules: Ummm...he might be an amalgamation of several people, but I think I'll refrain from commenting further--have to keep some of it to myself, don't I?

Q: Why did you elect to write literary women's fiction as opposed to traditional contemporary romance?
Jules: I knew I wanted to write in the literary women's fiction space because writing a story where the heroine's evolution is paramount--not just her relationship with Connor--is what really gets me, drives me--I love those types of stories. I like writing herstory--women's lives and journeys are so complex--I wanted to write a series that included a great love story, but didn't sacrifice the heroine's journey in any way. It's about Elizabeth finding her way--we all need to find our way. Sometimes people help with that, but ultimately each of us has to find our own path...and we all need love too.

Q: Why London and then Paris?
Jules: I lived in London for a time--I love it so much. It's one of the best cities on the planet, really. When I closed my eyes and thought about where Elizabeth's journey would take her I knew London would be next. And Paris--I lived in Lyon for a time as well and I've spent a lot of time in Paris so it seemed only natural for the final book to be set there. I also set certain things in motion in The Irish Cottage that make it impossible to end anywhere else--I knew I wanted to end it in France. Plus, Elizabeth has a major sweet tooth, like me, and Paris has the most amazing dessert masters in the world. I spent many hours pouring over the websites of my favorites and discovering some new ones. Those were the hardest and best research nights--I'm nocturnal, I write at night--and pouring over the websites of my favorite masters was heaven and hell. I wanted to get on a plane already. My sugar intake definitely went up while I was writing The Paris Apartment--and my waistline with it.

It’s pretty good writing. I didn’t realize it was a romance series when I picked it up. Just not my cup of tea. Really.... not my cup of anything.

- Just what I needed5 star

Some juicy romance in beautiful Ireland, but this story has more depth, more real ness than your average Romance, while still being a delicious piece of “Fantasyland.” Looking forward to reading the next book.

- The Irish Cottage5 star

I enjoyed reading this book so much, I purchased the sequel. The scenery is described in a manner that you feel like you are there. Very well written book and understood the ending as I am a writer myself.

- Great read5 star

Being quarantined prompted me to shift from audio books to ebooks and this was a great selection. A nice escape to a country I have visited often, but through this book it was a different enjoyable experience. Moving onto London with Elizabeth!

- The Irish cottage3 star

Positives: Beautiful descriptions of country side and special places. Loved the food descriptions and the colorful characters. Negatives: the sex was MUCH to graphic. It’s like watching porn, yuck. Didn’t any of the friends work? Seems all they did was drink and eat at the pubs. Where did they get the money? Didn’t any of them have kids? Sorry for the negatives.

- Great Read5 star

I loved this book. I anxiously awaited the next letter to see what it would reveal about Beth’s past. I am so excited to see what will happen next in her journey. This is a fabulous book that keeps your interest.

- The Irish Cottage5 star

I truly enjoyed this book and what it had to say about people and their past. No one knows about another person unless it is shared. All of us need to be more gentle an kind to others and not be so quick to judge. It would make for a better world.

Juliet Gauvin has written an amazing thought provoking story! I was immediately drawn into the journey. I cried, l laughed, I lived through this story right along with the well developed characters. It is a bit steamy but tasteful. I will be reading the rest of this series and highly recommend you enjoy it too!

- A sweet and sexy adventure5 star

When a lawyer quits her job to discover her roots, she meets a Prince Charming in a towel. They both suffer from loss of a loved one and find a way to heal with each other. A lovely story with sexy scenes.

- The Irish Cottage5 star

Loved it. Wonderful, complex character development kept me guessing and loving Elizabeth and Conner and all their friends.

- Wonderful escape4 star

What drew me to this book was that the setting was in Ireland. It’s an easy read in that you are immediately drawn in by the character descriptions. I love the strong female protagonist but mostly I love where the book took me. I felt as though I were right there in this lovely little cottage and every other place and/or event the character visited. I purchased book two and look forward to that journey too!

- Travel to Ireland and a great love, who could ask for more!5 star

Loved it! Having never traveled to Ireland, this book created a need in me to go there. The love story with all it’s poignancy and angst unfolded to make a great read and a hunger to know the rest of the story. I’m moving on to London in the next book!

Wonderful read

- A GEM!5 star

I LOVE reading. Primarily books set somewhere in Europe, with an element of history thrown in. Because I don’t get a lot of time to read, it is PRECIOUS, delicious time when I do. So I am hesitant & skeptical when it comes to committing to a new read. It needs to be WORTH IT. I have a series of national best sellers behind me & was longing for my next treasured story, so the bar was high. I came across The Irish Cottage whilst browsing the free options. In all honesty, the cover design didn’t have me convinced, but what’s that old adage...? ;) I am SO glad I looked into it further & even more ecstatic that there are 2 more in the series! I was literally giddy to read this story & cannot wait to dive into the next. THANK YOU for sharing these exquisite stories with us!

- The Irish cottage5 star

- The Irish Cottage5 star

Great story that had me hooked from the start. From the Irish countryside, the mystique of the aunt's letters to her relationship with Conner. Fast moving and charming!

- Excellent Insightful Book5 star

This book is more than just a standard romance novel. It is a journey through a woman’s awakening to what her life should be. I actually found myself wishing there would be a book about Mags as she is such a full colorful character even deceased in this book! Looking forward to Beth’s adventures & continued discoveries in London!!

I loved how this book takes you through the main character’s process of emotions and life’s journeys, with a sense of lighthearted freedom and true inner strengths. I don’t usually leave reviews , just stars without explanation, but I can honestly say “ I couldn’t put it down “ I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next....

- The Irish Cottage5 star

A very well written story with characters that become real. A story that touches us all as we travel this life; sometimes in touch with our true selves but most often not. We search to find our own true selves and those events where we really feel at peace and connected; as we follow the adventures of Lizzie and Connor. Looking forward to books two and three!

- Not a happy ever after4 star

But a good read. I generally stay well clear of romance stories, they're just too much like fairy tales. But I enjoyed the Irish Cottage. Good characters, well paced, a little more humour injected into the story would be nice, maybe in another book about Beth.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of intrigue right to the end as well as having plenty of highs and lows and romance. I like a book I can't wait to turn the page to see what happened next. This book did that for me. Well done

- Enjoyable, undemanding4 star

If you want to read the sort of book that you would pick up in an airport to devour in a few days on holiday, that would entertain you but not ask you to think too hard about plot or characters, then this is a good one to choose. I read it quickly, on tea and lunch breaks at work, a few chapters in the evening at home, and I did enjoy it. However, great literature it is not - but then who wants to always read great literature ? One thing that annoys me though are number of 'typos' in this book, does no one ever proof read their work any more ? Phone instead of phobe, weary instead of wary, bare instead of bear, and those are only the ones I can think of immediately - such a shame to leave them in when they could have been easily fixed.

- The Irish Cottage5 star

Really enjoyed the story . Kept you totally fixed and very hard to put down . Highly recommend this to anyone . Can't wait to start next book .

I just finished this series and wow, every thing that I had written down like “hmm I wonder what he meant by that gesture” or “I wonder if she is going to come back to that later” she answered beautifully. The only thing that I assumed would come from this series is another series focusing on Audre’s love life. I thought Audre would end up with Killian. Will you make another series on them?

- Not what I expected5 star

This book and the author is amazing. Not what I expected at all! A must read!

- The Irish Cottage5 star

A wonderful, romantic ride that caught me just at the right time! A great sexy read with content!

- The Irish Cottage4 star

Creative romance with enough twists and turns to make you want more. Lucky for the reader, it looks like there are 2 more adventures for Beth/Lizzie and the reader.

- The Irish Cottage5 star

Loved it. Full of real issues faced in complications families always bring. Love Ireland and have been most places mentioned so that enhanced the story for me. Personally If i could change one thing, I could do with less graphic relationship scenes, but otherwise I enjoyed the book and probably will buy the next.

This was a great read....and felt every move by these words written. I’ll read the London flat when it’s $1.99.... Annie

- A fun read4 star

Interesting characters, a nice setting, a good read with a healthy dose of romance

- The Irish Cottage5 star

I enjoyed this book so much that it was hard not to devour it at one setting...but life interrupts and couldn’t wait to pick it up at days end! The characters of Connor and Lara fit perfectly together. The descriptions of settings and locale were superb and I felt as if I was there. Excellent storytelling!

- Love this book5 star

Jules is an excellent writer. Here use of words forms beautiful scenes, as well is conveying the emotion of the characters. I read romance novels for years, and stopped because it was all so fake. Jules, thank you for showing the real complexities of life, that not everything is as it appears on the surface, and.....for using condoms in erotica!!!!!!

- The Irish Cottage5 star

I found this book on accident and was intrigued just by the title. After many years of genealogical research, Irish and English films and TV series and a DNA test, I found out the I am 49% Irish, hence the interest. I read this in one setting, I just couldn’t put it down! Laughing through certain parts, I could see this playing out in my minds eye, such as the film “PS, I Love You”. I loved it, guess it’s on to London now...

- ♥♥♥5 star

I absolutely LOVED this book!! I connected with the main character and her love as well. I've always wanted to run away to Ireland and find myself. Can't wait to read more from this series!

- The Irish Cottage5 star

Loved it. Great story from first page. Couldn't wait to read the next part.

- Lazy Sunday Read4 star

An easy book to relax with, the descriptions make you feel like you are there. An atypical ending, enough to keep you wanting more. This book came up in a search for books “like Nora Roberts”; the author has a style of her own, and did not disappoint. I’m off to read the next one in the series!

- The Irish Cottage3 star

The mystery of this story pulled me in quickly. I was initially unaware that it was a trilogy which I would have continued had it not been for the explicit, unrealistic sex scenes. Now I will not continue reading Mags' remaining letters or learn what happens in the life of her niece. Excellent writing can create passion and desire in a story without needing to plunge into what my very liberal and progressive friend calls "bodice-ripper mentality".

- Wonderful story5 star

I enjoyed this book so much I bought the second one. I NEVER buy the next book in a series. I get online books from bookbub, read the first one and done, on the cheap, never intending to buy the second one. Thank you for a wonderful story, already reading The London Flat.

- Great book5 star

- Very pleasant fantasy!5 star

Just as it should be.

- Good read5 star

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it’s out of my usual genre. I received this copy free but will definitely have to buy the rest of the series. I’ve enjoyed Beth’s journey to find herself so far and I can’t think that I won’t enjoy the rest.

- Great book!!!!5 star

I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the other ones!!!

- The Irish Cottage5 star

I don't write reviews. Ever. I's what I do best, but oh my lord this book! Why have I never heard of this author?! I read voraciously and have missed this hugely talented woman who plays with words so well. True that I have ....related with characters, held back tears so painfully only to sob...while reading, loved and hated characters......but this book I literally laughed out loud I startled myself. I then continued to laugh so hard over the scene on St Patrick's day and the "never ever" game. In decades of reading I have never laughed while reading a scene to this extent. Oh my lord this books shines bright for every quality an experienced romance novel reader hopes for. I'm onto book two next and anything else this talented author cares to write.

Found the book well worth reading and would recommend it to all of my face book friends. The story I found was not only well written but it made you want to keep reading.the plot was perfect and a lot of people I know could relate to it.i found my self looking back at some of my past after leaving home at 17 and returning after I turned 36. Some parts made me sad but overall it made me very happy. I now look back on my past with no regret. In all the books I've read this was one of the best. Hope to read more of your stories. Stay safe, and keep up the good work.
