Sentence of Marriage (Promises to Keep: Book 1) Book Summary

“I won’t have her forced,” Jack said. “Let her decide for herself.”

Amy knew her father meant it. She could say no if she wanted. But this marriage would make everything all right. They could put all the trouble she had caused behind them. Everyone would be happy again.

Everyone except her.

“Sentence of Marriage” is the first book in the three-volume “Promises to Keep”.

In nineteenth century New Zealand, there are few choices for a farm girl like Amy. Her life seems mapped out for her by the time she is twelve. Amy dreams of an exciting life in the world beyond her narrow boundaries. But it is the two people who come to the farm from outside the valley who change her life forever, and Amy learns the high cost of making the wrong choice.

"One of the best historical novels I’ve had the pleasure to read in years." - WorkingGirl Reviews.

"The story was captivating, the characters real, the dialogue crisp. I admit to having cried and laughed and even having wanted to murder a character and beat another one within an inch of his life — which is simply a testament to how well written these books are." - AmericanEditor.

Sentence of Marriage (Promises to Keep: Book 1) - Shayne Parkinson Book Reviews

  • An enjoyable read! (Docentlady)

This tale gives the reader a good look into farm life in New Zealand a century ago and how rigid morality can tear apart a young girl’s life. Looking forward to reading the rest of the story.
  • Sentence of marriage (mallieomallie)

    Sad and depressing
  • This book was so sad (Mrssavy1)

Her family, minus her brothers, are terrible. So selfish and expecting too much from her. I cried like hell reading this. She was just....... I wanna choke about 5 of those characters!!!!!!! Amy had to be a woman too early. Poor baby.
  • Sentenace of Marriage (book 1) (Older_Sis)

Very well written. Felt like an onlooker to Amy's life. Shed a few tears at her ultimate fate at story's ending.
  • Amazing read (Louisianablondie)

This was the best read ! Loved how the characters evolved. Couldn't put this story down. Loved it. Loved the author who pinned this wonderful book.
  • Sentence of marriage (Tracyjothompson)

I've never written a review before but I Hated this book! The girl though sweet allowed herself to be a victim through out! Would not recommend it! A waste of my time! Almost every character did not have the character to truly help this girl in need! Hated it! Will never read this author again! Depressing!
  • Well done! (Rush61)

Well written, very interesting tale of a young woman and her trials in her youth. I found the descriptions of the land and farms to be a lovely addition to this story, and it really helped to give a complete picture of Amy's life. I was so sad over the way she was treated, and at the same time envious of her strength of character. As for Jimmy, I have high hopes that some deadly Australian spider finds its way into his bed. Serves him right. And the wicked stepmother.... I wanted to hold her head under water! I'm off to buy the next book in the series.
  • This was drudgery reading! (I don't like ads)

This book is too long and sad. It's Cinderella with no happy ending! This was so depressing.
  • Great read, great characters, amazing story line (BnA23)

Amazing book, well written, characters are so amazing with depth you either love them with every bit of you or despise them to the point of almost breaking your kindle (or whatever you're on). im on the third book now, the story line has dulled a bit but i cant stop. Highly recommend. Love the 1800's story line.
  • Sentence of marriage (Georgiegirl1968)

Disappointment. No purpose, no plot. Waste of time. All the characters just keep making stupid mistakes while being portrayed as sensible. Contradicting to say the least. Writer does have potential though, if he could offer the reader a story worthy of investing their time.
