Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden Book Summary

A literary sensation and runaway bestseller, this brilliant debut novel tells with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.

Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read

Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it.

In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable.

Great book. It's a beautiful storyline with accurate descriptions of her life story. For a moment u feel totally submerged into the writing like u are a part of that time. It's an inspiration that the rainbow surely does come after the rain

Love it. I read this when i was like 13 I know too young but I watched the movie and had to read the book love it still in my top 10

A new favorite. I almost didn’t read it cause I saw the movie forever ago. I’m so glad I picked it up cause I couldn’t put it down.

A real page turner. Excellent book from start to finish!

Memoirs of a Geisha. From the minute I seen the movie I loved Memoirs of a Geisha and watched it over and over. Never would I imagined the book being more interesting. What a remarkable author. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with us. It is truly a honor to Have read this book. It is my favorite one of all time. I've had the pleasure of telling my daughter to read it. Since then she has read it three times start to finish. Thank you. Thank you.

Stunning. I've read this book and it's absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this. A book about sensation, love, hurt and decisions.

A Stunning Story of the Truest Love. I was captivated from the start, so by the time I got to the end of the book in the same day I started reading it, I found myself in tears. This is a story of a girl's journey throughout this strange experience we call life, mixed with the secrecy of being a geisha, and ultimately a journey of self-discovery. Such a riveting story brought my heart alive and reminded me why life is worth living no matter the circumstances. This story is best read if you are going through some hard times in your life and are unsure of what the future may look like. Because as any Historian or very aged human being will tell you - history has a strange way of repeating itself...

Amazing girl to woman story!. The transition from innocence to cruel reality, captivated in a beautiful tale of hope.

Memoirs of a Geisha. This book captured me during the 1st page. The Japanese history and hardships of the people through the years, the learning of the training and life of a Geisha pulled your heartstrings and gave me a much better understanding of life in Japan and last but not least the blessings of our life in good times or bad.

Amazing. I could not put the book down. If u enjoy history this is a must read. You feel as though u were actually their. I got so attached to the book, I could reread it

One of my all time favorites. I first read this book in high school, borrowing it from my mother. I have since read it 3 or 4 more times. It immerses you in another world, and is very romantic. I would recommend it to anyone.

A beautiful book.... ...about a not-so-beautiful subject.

Ehh. Honestly, I didn't like this book too much. Maybe it was because I HAD to read it for a class, but I don't know. Don't let my opinion keep you reading it.

I cried at the end of the book.. Simple, complex, beautiful, human.

Amazing!!. This book takes you away from everything around you and immerses you in a place and time so far away it is very much like time traveling. Im speechless at the clarity and story telling abilities of the author. MUST READ!!

Unrealistic. Great for fantasy.. I read this book as a teenager. And I was fascinated by it until I heard about the lawsuit that entailed after, in which Arthur Golden violated the confidentiality agreement he’d held with Mineko Iwasaki, and other geisha he’d interviewed. The worst lie though is probably the perpetuation of the stereotype that deep down, geisha are prostitutes, by bringing in the mizuage as a sexual ceremony. Fact check: that isn’t a sex ceremony, it’s actually a referral within the geisha community for their annual earnings, which are public record. Ridiculous. It’s certainly a somewhat entertaining read if you like incorrect facts about the culture.

Memoirs of a Geisha. Beautiful read.

Good read. Great buy.. Very good book. I would recommend anyone should read.

Memoirs of a geisha. Beautiful.

Love. Best book I’ve read

The best. This is probably the best book I have ever read. Worth reading more than once. A book you don't want to stop reading and hopes that it won't end either. Thank you

Enchanting and inspiring. I first learned about this book when I saw the movie. Well, needless to say the movie falls woefully short of the book. I've always been intrigued by Japanese culture and this look into the life of a true geisha was such a magnificent read that I doubt I'll ever get tired of re-reading it. The life of this one geisha, her hopes and dreams as a girl, her trials and tribulations as she grew and became a geisha is such an unbelievable tale to be true and yet it is. Everything she over-came, and all the things she endured is to say the least awe inspiring. Magnificent, utterly magnificent!🎌🍶

Memoirs of a Geisha. This was a great book that was very detailed. It is a classic that that translated to the big screen very well. I recommend to all!

Memoirs of a geisha. Beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful. This story is amazing. It is very descriptive and full of emotion. It is addicting. I found it hard to put down & even dreamt about it from time to time.

A very befitting title. Excellent book in every way.

Addicting. This novel is absolutely incredible. The way this author describes this geisha’s experiences makes every single detail seem real. I have read this book multiple times and will continue to do so.

The Life Journey of Chiyo. As a geisha, Chiyo undoubtedly lived an unfortunate life. Her parents died early, and she was basically sold into slavery at such a young age. Spending her childhood and early adulthood learning how to serve men with her sexuality, she was a epitome of the women in the patriarchal Japanese society, objectified by men and subordinate to them. However, she was also fortunate that, by being a geisha and spoiled by her customers and dannas, she avoided the torment of poverty and war, which enabled her to have a unique perspective on the world around her, the way of survival, and love and hate. It was a very fascinating experience about the Japanese culture and the changes in the Japanese society throughout the 20th century.

Amazing. One if my favorite books and movies. Great book with a perfect story line, and well written. A must read for everyone.

Memoirs of A Geisha. This book was awesome I liked it a lot! It told more of the story that was not able to be in the movie.. I would recommend this book to any one that likes to read and read memoirs. All together I enjoyed it!

Amazing!. Fantastic read! Truly a one of a kind book...a must read!

Simply Stunning. A masterful work of story-telling, I have read this over and over and have yet to get jaded by the nuances and true beauty of this book. Please read this book - you will not regret one moment!

Recommended!. This is one of my all time favorite books, captivating from start to finish.

Absolutely loved it!. I absolutely loved reading this book. It’s a unique and beautiful story of the journey of young Chiyo to become a successful geisha. The way it’s written and the language style is amazing! The story was moving, breathtaking and touching. I couldn’t put this book down. The descriptions in the book really lure you to the story , and you feel like you have become a part of it. While reading it , it was like watching a movie in my mind. And one of the most beautiful movies!

Excellent!!. What a great book. A real page turner. Loved it.

Wonderful!. This book is one of my favorites! It captures the heart and ensnares the mind, every time I read it.. I always find it hard to put down! I love the attention to detail and the emotion put forth by the author, every page is like a painting. Love it!

Excellent!. This is a phenomenal book! It's extremely well written and pays very close attention down to every little detail about geisha. Not only does this book educate on the ways of a geisha but it is also a great read! Arthur Golden did an excellent job on this book and it is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is not just a great book but is a great piece of literature and is definitely worth the read! When you read this book you easily forget that it was written by a man because he entered Sayuri's mind so well and told the story so phenomenally. It's also hard to believe this is a fictional story. Of you have read this and enjoyed it I suggest you read "Geisha, A Life" by Mineko Iwasaki. She is one of the geisha that Golden interviewed while doing research for this book and this novel is loosely based off of her life but she has written her own story as well which is also very good!

Excellent story. After spending time in Japan, particularly in Kyoto and seeing “geisha” women strolling through the streets, I was curious to know more about them. Even though the so called geisha women I saw were tourists dressed in traditional kimono, it still made me curious. This delightful and heartfelt story leaves a lasting impression.
