Lions of Kandahar by Rusty Bradley & Kevin Maurer Book Summary

“A raw and authentic war story about untamed Green Berets in action.”—Dalton Fury, New York Times bestselling author of Kill Bin Laden

Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. Dispatched as a diversionary force in support of the main coalition attack, Bradley’s Special Forces A-team watched as the NATO force was quickly engulfed in a vicious counterattack. Key to relieving it was possession of Sperwan Ghar, a modest patch of high ground. Bradley’s small detachment assaulted the hill and, in the midst of a savage and unforgettable firefight, soon learned they were facing nearly a thousand seasoned fighters. Now Bradley recounts the whole remarkable story as it actually happened and brings to life the men who impossibly won the day—Americans and Afghans alike—each unique, all indelible in their everyday exercise of extraordinary heroism.

Outstanding. This is one of the best books I have ever read!! It's an easy read that keeps you glued to the book. I picked up the book and was done with it in two days. I just couldn't put it down. Every time I put it down I couldn't stop thinking about what was coming next. Being in Afghanistan myself I could really relate to this book. You will not be let down by this book. You can't paint a more accurate picture of the things we experience over there. Thank you guys for serving.

Spec Ops. Great read! Every man in this book is a true hero!

Lions of Kanadhar. Sweet book

Must read. Couldn’t put it down.

Great Book. Truly awesome book about a not well known story that deserves much more recognition.

Lions of Kandahar. Not a bad read, good combat stories mixed with the usual I did everything, trained everyone and was most competent blather. Worth 10 bucks.

Lions of Kandahar. Gripping first hand account. It is the only book I continue to reread and at a novel / non-fiction tomb a week that says it all. Very little else really compares. At 58 I can no longer wish to grow up to come close to Maj. Bradley as a man, a leader, a husband and a patriot. Perhaps In the next life. Richard W Coviello Jr. Lackawaxen PA

Great. A Great War book

An amazing read!!. I literally could not stop reading this book. One of the best books I have read. It's not that it is an amazing account of combat operation, but the flow of the story so well each page literally leaves you wanting to turn the page to follow the story line. Page by page pulling you deeper into the story. This book should have been turned into a movie a long time ago!!!

Solid read. Great first hand account of one of the most important battles in Afghanistan!!

Lions of Kandahar. It's great to be an American! Awesome book about true American heroes. I will read this again. We need more like these men. USAF pilot.

Extremely compelling and a must read by every American, soldier or Not!. I heard about this book from my Mom who saw the interview with the author on CNN, I believe. I am a voracious reader and can finish a book in a matter of hours. However, this book was so well written, I forced myself to read it in three days, vs 3 hours. I wanted to really absorb what we don't get from the media, (for the record I hate the media). I came to know through this book what our SF and soldiers are up against in this war. I commend the determination of the men and women who go out each day and fight this war, knowing fully what they are up against. You all are heros in my book. Everyone of you deserve a Medal of Honor! Even more compelling to me is the frustration that our soldiers face when having to "retake" ground they had fought for over and over again. That is determination. The mental strain knowing what they have done will not be sustained. That is so draining in every way.

Classic Military Tale. One of the best books written about the - reported middle stage of the long conflict.

Lions of Khandahar. Simply amazing. Thank you for sharing this heroic piece of military history

Amazing book about amazing heros. I finished this book in two days. I couldn't put it down. This books proves how successful we were in Afghanistan when our troops were supported up the chain by their leaders. If we had not been distracted by the Iraq war and had our current president not pulled out before the job was done, we could have finished the job with mainly special forces, afghan forces, and supported by our conventional forced and overwhelming air power.

Absolutely Mind Blowing. The fastest I've ever read a book, I couldn't put it down. Currently I have an 18x contract, 34-years of age with a young family, It's time to sacrifice my body for the freedom of of our Great Nation. Thank you for your service. "De Oppresso Liber"

Lions of Kandahar. Amazing book. Must read. A story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Thank you to all service men and women.

Lions of Kandahar - The Movie. What a great movie this story would make. I can't wait to see it all on the big screen.

Well Written First Hand Account. Well written for a first hand account, this Special Forces battle diary is difficult to put down. A vastly outnumbered band of SF operators, and the Afghan troops they stiffen into resolute, professional soldiers by their training, example and leadership, fights its way across a broad swathe of Taliban country. An excellent, often self-effacing glimpse of an SF officer's view of Operation Medusa, that critical but underreported campaign around Kandahar in 2006, there is plenty of action, firepower and incredible battlefield bravery on display. I have not given 5 stars, however, because personal interactions are exasperatingly superficial, stereotypical and sanitized; for example, almost invariably, the only expressions from SF operators is a "grin" or a clever quip, even with the most heated combat or grievous loss. Certainly these men are steely, but this becomes almost cartoonish. Yet the book is still hard to put down, provides fascinating operational detail, and an intriguing, if biased, view of the ISAF/NATO coalition's relative impotence, at least on the ground in the desperate years when Bush was ignoring Afghanistan. NATO air power, in contrast, is depicted as a universally courageous, aggressive and overpoweringly lethal "guardian angel". Well deserved angels for those brave SF troops, who did so much with so little.

Lions of Kandahar. This work of history Describes in harrowing detail where good prevails over evil because some have courage to place themselves, despite seemingly insurmountable odds, in between evil men and the Liberty all should be blessed to have. Not reading this book fuels ignorance.

GREAT READ!!!!!. Loved every page. Worth every penny spent.

Amazing. This book is a great buy.

Five stars. Very professionally written. Very entertaining as we'll. could not put it down. I could feel the heat and struggles of that battle.

Must Read!. Awesome book. It’s a must. Thank you to the special forces soldiers who risked their lives to protect our great!

Lions of Kandahar. I really enjoyed this book. I have always admired young men and women who keep our country free. This book gives a voice to those who protect and serve and insight on the people who live in places like Kandahar.

Great. Hard to put down.

Thank you. Awesome book Thank You to all the men and women who protect my freedom

Great Read. Wow what a fantastic account of Afghanistan war. Very well done

Action packed. Couldn't put this book down. This is for the commander and infantryman who needs to know what fighting is all about. From decision making to leadership. This is a must read for Marine officers/ leaders. This book gives you details and how to fight when the cards are against you and the deck is deep and filled with wild cards. Semper Fidelis.

What a Book!. As a infantryman in the Army I couldn't be prouder of these heroic Green Berets as well as the ANA soldiers that assisted them. Captain Rusty delivered an excellent play by play of the events that unfolded in 2006. It's a darn shame that their sacrifices were completely wasted due to the politics of war. Such an important location should never have been left under the control of NATO forces. As a veteran that's been to the Kandahar and as a soldier that will return there next October, I know all to well the BS politics of this war and the constant need to make the inferior NATO feel like our equals when they clearly are not up to the fight time and time again!

Lions of Kandahar. simply gripping, a tale of heroism and an operation that was succesful despite all odds.

Accuracy is there. Having served in panjwai, and been to sperwan ghar innumerable times, it's great to see how that base was founded. The school is still riddled with bullet holes. The marijuana fields go on for hundreds of acres and the grape rows are super sketchy. This book is right on in detail and accuracy of the area. Great read also

Great book. Gives real insight to what these true warriors endure. Hoorah

Lions of Kandahar. Thank God for warriors like this.

Lions of Kandahar. Puts the reader not only in the front line on the American side but on the Afghan & Taliban also! Amazing read!

Must read. An amazing personal account of a special forces commander and his men.

True combat. Gritty combat, true page turner. Highly recommend the "Lions of Kandahar".

Awesome read. Rusty is a good friend of mine and a true American hero. Everyone should read this so that Americans everywhere will begin to understand the sacrifice our troops make in the effort to preserve our freedoms!

Great Read !! Fast moving & puts you in the action. If you're a patriot and love reading military books, this is right up your alley. It's easy with all the Seal fascination right now to overlook the sacrifice ALL our brave men & women make. This is a great focus on the special operations forces with the Army and the incredible work they do. While a lot of Seal books spend a bunch of time going over all the training they do, this one puts you in the middle of a single operation that was pivotal and lasted weeks. It's one of the Bette books I have read to put you in the ebb and flow of a hard fought battle for a strategic initiative. A great book and hard to put down. Thank you to all our soldiers and God bless you and your families.

Lions of Kandahar. Awesome book. Proud to be an American. The courage these men displayed is unbelievable. True HEROS

Lions. I love this book for 2 main reasons: first it shows the SF as smart, human and absolutely not Rambo like people. This community shows strong values, respect, go beyond, Integrity... Then, it is a wonderfull story, It was impossible to stop reading...

Awesome!. Love reading stories about Green Berets, Rangers, and Special Forces! You never hear about them in the media like Seal Team! True heros!

Outstanding. I could never have imagined how intense, extensive and seemingly never ending were the battles our Special Forces fought in. Knowing a few brave SF solders I'm not surprised by the victory and I'm inspired by the endless bravery. I've never served but grew up as an Army brat and have always appreciated my station in life which was and continues to be afforded me by the tireless and selfless service of others in our Armed Forces. Thankful Major Rusty Bradley, your team and all Special Forces and all our beloved military. You make it possible for me to be a proud American. God bless you and God bless America.

Wow. Best book I've read in a long time..I felt as though I was there for every battle, couldn't put it down and I feel I know the price our soldiers pay for my freedom. Thank you for writing this wonderful book

Amazing!. This is one of the most amazing books I ever read! If you start reading ,you can not stop. Its great to know and meet the brave mens that make for you and me to be free!! Land of the free thanks to the brave!!

Riveting Account. What a great story, extremely well written! I felt like I was there and could almost feel the heat, dirt, sweat and blood, the exhaustion of prolonged battle.....even the crack of incoming rounds and they RPG bursts seemed close. The overall sense of danger was more than palpable. I read this on my iPhone and could hardly put it down and when I was forced to, I couldn't wait to get back to it. Thank you Sir for a great account which made me understand the challenges we face in places like this so much better. More importantly thank you for your service and that of the men under your command, especially those who paid so dearly. Excellent book!

Lions of Kandahar. Great read! Felt like I was there with the Green Berets...

Amazing. Well written, inspiring. This strikes me as the stuff of legend, in a time when the noise of so many things that don't matter dominate the news, Internet and public interest. This matters. Thank you for sharing this extraordinary piece of history.

Must Read. Awe inspiring tale of true warriors and heros that is difficult to put down.

Contrived.. Look it up. Full of fabricated cookie cutter characters, situations, interactions. After reading Outlaw Platoon, Lions of K comes across as a naive fairy tale in comparison. If you're looking for realism- real people and an honest account, look elsewhere. In the positive side, it is well written and is entertaining.
