Fantastic tutorial. Thomas has made the tutorial that I wish existed when I started recording location sound (25 years ago). As a matter of fact sound mixers of any experience will benefit from Down To The Wire. Anyone recording sound for picture in 2013 needs to know how to competently place lavaliere microphones. Down To The Wire will help you gain that knowledge. I highly recommend this book. Excellent Resource. This book is an excellent resource for any location sound professional. In an industry in which the right way to do something is 'the way that works', learning another professional's perspective is simply invaluable. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so too are the great videos in this iBook. You'll get to see what Thomas is doing up close, and the very first time on location that one of his tips saves you and allows you to record flawless sound, the book has paid for itself.

A wonderful resource. I have worked as a production sound mixer for over 40 years and this is the most comprehensive and engaging tutorial I have ever encountered --- this is a must read for anyone working in our industry and having to place lavaliere microphones (and that is just about everyone who needs to record sound for picture in today's world). It is actually so much more and I am surprised by how much I learned from reading this book. For the new person just starting out, there is a wealth of valuable information regarding set etiquette, work ethic and responsibility, lessons which if learned early enough will go a long way towards having a successful career in sound. It's a great read!

Fast Track To Successful Sound. I've been in video production for fourteen years and sound location recording for three of those years. I have largely been self taught regarding sound because i didn't know anybody in my region to apprentice with in order to learn the tricks of the trade. Needless to say I got a few things right but have had my fair share of trial and error moments as well. Thomas has written--hands down--the best interactive tutorial I have ever read. Down To The Wire can shave years of mistakes off of your career and provide you with valuable techniques you need to know now. You not only read about the techniques, but they are clearly demonstrated in video format as well, so you see exactly how to wire your talent in a variety of situations. This is an indispensable book for those new to sound recording, but I would also venture that even seasoned pros will learn some new tricks as well. This is the best $29 I have ever spent to advance my career and reputation. I only wish I had this book several years ago at the beginning of my sound career. Before you spend a chunk of change on your next piece of gear, I would recommend purchasing Down To The Wire first. It's a game changer.

Lots of Good Info and Ideas. I purchased this iBook the first day it came out to see what it had to offer. Even as an experienced production sound mixer I feel that you should always be working on your craft. Whether it's by reading resources or just physically doing the work.. It's a must. If you plan to purchase this book and expect to be a pro at wiring after you're done with it don't waste your time and money. What this book does is give you a starting point and basic ideas on how to do the job. Wiring each person is different, and one method may not work on another person. Experience is key to doing this. Remember that. The book covers a wide range of subjects from etiquette to mic supplies and placement. The demo videos are well done and are more help than if it were just still images used. The steps are very easy to understand and are explained why they're done. As someone with experience in the field, much of what I've read are things that I've seen and applied in the field. If you're starting out or a novice it's definitely a good resource to look through. If you're a long time professional this may not do a whole lot for you, but if you're interested in tidbits of information and ideas to get your mind jogging by all means go for it. In my opinion it's hard to hate books about your craft. There are some things to take note of which perhaps can be updated in the future. During different demos different mics are used which some people may not have access to. This may be an issue for people starting out even though the basic concepts are the same throughout. The book does not contain info on side-address mics that are somewhat still commonly used. So people with those mics should be aware of that. For me, I would like to see more info on the use of more accessories that come with the mics. Another thing I would like to see is perhaps more ideas on handling problematic situations such as chest hair, noisy wardrobe, etc. That's where the fun is at. Overall, it's a very good book for those starting out, and a nice read for those with plenty of experience. There is a non-iPad version, but a separate purchase for those without iPad. I hope the author has updates in mind for this book, because there is quite a bit of potential.
