FOR MANY OF US, THE YEAR 2009 FOR THE SOUTHERN HISTORICAL Association will be remembered most by the sudden death in August of our president, Jack Temple Kirby. This is the only time that we have lost a president during his term, and it was particularly sad to lose Jack, who had embraced his leadership role, as both vice president and president, with such enthusiasm and joy. He was thrilled to be presiding over the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Association and was as hands-on as any president I have worked with in planning the meeting in Louisville. The various ways we commemorated this landmark date bore Jack's stamp--from Bethany L. Johnson's well-received opening night presentation on the SHA's origins and the highs and lows of its long history to the recognition of our former presidents, which Jack had planned to deliver himself. He was in touch with me regularly throughout the summer, eager to learn which of his predecessors had accepted our special invitation to attend and thinking out loud as to what he would say about each. Instead, much of the meeting was spent paying tribute to Jack himself. He had completed his presidential address; and thanks to his long-term partner Constance Pierce, who retrieved the file from his computer, and to Jack's dear friend Barbara J. Fields, who agreed to condense, edit, and read the address on Friday night as originally scheduled, Jack was very much with us in spirit. Following Barbara's reading of what has to be one of the most quirky, personal, provocative, and ultimately moving addresses ever prepared by an SHA president, a number of Jack's closest friends and colleagues--Jim Cobb, Pete Daniel, Thavolia Glymph, Mary Frederickson, Nan Woodruff, and Mart Stewart shared memories, insights, and observations that allowed us all to appreciate him even more fully as both a scholar and a person. For those who did not get to hear these remarks in person, most are posted on the SHA website. It was especially meaningful to us all to have Constance Pierce, and Jack's two children, Matt and Val Kirby, with us that night and for much of the meeting. They proceeded from Louisville to Miami, Ohio, where Jack's longtime colleagues there provided an equally moving memorial service. It is also due to Constance that we were able to publish the full version of Jack's address in the February issue of the Journal. Besides retrieving it in the first place, she worked closely with the Journal staff in moving the piece through their meticulous editorial process.
