Annual Report of the Secretary-Treasurer (Southern Historical Association ) de Journal of Southern History Resumen del Libro

HOUSTON PLAYED HOST TO A ROUSING ANNUAL MEETING IN NOVEMBER. With Texas scholar Darlene Clark Hine as our president and Journal editor and Texas native John B. Boles in charge of local arrangements, the meeting in the spectacular Hyatt Regency Hotel was a special one for a number of reasons. Although attendance was somewhat lower than other recent meetings, our 1,164 registrants represented a stronger turnout than previous meetings held on our western frontier. The number of Texans, particularly graduate students, who attended the meeting was especially striking. Many of them were first-time attendees, and their positive feedback we hope is a sign that they will become faithful members and regular attendees in years to come. A high priority of President Hine's presidency was to make the SHA and its meeting more diverse and more inclusive. With Steven F. Lawson and Nancy A. Hewitt as program chairs, the program was very much a reflection of that goal, from an unusual opening session in which historians, political scientists, and current legislators discussed the impact of race on modern Texas politics to Hine's own well-received presidential address on the remarkable career of a female African American physician in early-twentieth-century South Carolina (published in the February issue of the Journal). Interestingly, the sessions drawing the largest audiences were not, as is usually the case, the Civil War sessions, though those were certainly well attended and inspired lively discussion. Rather it was presentations dealing with race and gender that proved most popular. The largest turnouts in regular sessions were for two focused on particular books: one on James M. McPherson's The Struggle for Equality, his pioneering study of abolitionists during and after the Civil War, published forty years ago; the other on Deborah Gray White's landmark study of slave women, Ar'n't I a Woman? A roundtable on the future of African American women's history was the next most popular session, followed closely by presentations devoted to Indians and the Atlantic world, the racial implications of the Louisiana Purchase, white opposition to school desegregation, and biography and autobiography in civil rights studies. Even a session on Denmark Vesey on Sunday morning--not always a time slot to assure good attendance--attracted a large audience.
