MANY RECENT ARTICLES in the literature and on the web discuss the emergence of Web 2.0 and its applicability to higher education. While numerous blogs, discussion groups, and the media are touting the new Web 2.0 tools, others, like Tim Berners-Lee, mastermind behind the World Wide Web, claim that this is a Silicon Valley buzzword to describe the Internet after the dot-corn bust (1). Even a strategic analysis of Web 2.0 by Armapartners views it as "part hype, part marketing jargon and part reality" (2, p. 3). So what is Web 2.0? Is it a new product that we must purchase? Something we should worry about? Do our students use it, and must we update our web services for a newer version? Before rushing out and taking action, let us examine this phenomenon by starting with some definitions--or at least a conceptualization of Web 2.0.
