Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of The Covenant of Water: A beautifully written, page-turning family saga of Ethiopia and America, doctors and patients, exile and home. • “Filled with mystical scenes and deeply felt characters.... Verghese is something of a magician as a novelist.” —USA Today

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon. Orphaned by their mother’s death and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution.

Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles—and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined.

This sweeping, emotionally riveting novel that "shows how history and landscape and accidents of birth conspire to create the story of a single life" (Los Angeles Times).

Breathtaking, Poignant novel. I lack the words needed to convey my feelings about this superb novel. The characters have such depth. There were many spiritual lessons wrapped within the story. The details were so rich it was hard to remember that this was a work of fiction. I envy the author's gift of painting grand but realistic panoramas with words.

Cutting for Stone. Great read for healthcare professionals..

Cutting for Stone. A wonderful story, well- written and easy to read for a lay person. Recommended to me by a physician friend. I am now inspired to re-read the author's non-fiction book My Own Country which takes place near where I live. I read that one about 15 years ago and still think of it's lessons often. Inspirational!

Cutting For Stone. Great read!

Great and moving book. I read so many reviews that this was a top ten favorite and I must agree. I also read that others wept when the book ended. Not just for the story but that the story was over and they had to say goodbye to the characers. I agree here too. It is so odd that I have felt a sense of grieving today since I finished the book. It is sad that I have to say goodbye to the characters. I almost want to start the book all over again. Great character development and vocabulary. Interesting story with political and realistic situations. A fascinating insight into the world of medicine and a great story about relationships. A wonderful read! I am very happy that this book was recommended to me. Thank you!

Good travel read. Read this book! It takes a few chapters to find your mojo. If you have any investment in medical or surgical interests, it will soon have you turning the pages. Great story and excellent writing!

Reader. Incredible journey into a world of love, heartbreak, medicine, devotion, and a place foreign but one I would have been honored to know. The characters truly represent the variety of human strength, weakness, greatness, and mediocrity that can become strong and valuable. This story willing to every emotion, yet teach many life lessons along with a heavy emphasis on the practice of medicine. The insight into the medical world is fascinating but not for the faint of heart. One may skip the "blood and gore" and still love this beautifully written tale.

One of the Best ever!. This book is so fabulous, I am speechless. It is a book that is beautifully written, a fascinating story, so full of interesting characters, information and scenery so well described that one is transported front Cochin to Madras, then to Addis Abba, New York and you feel like you were there.

Cutting for Stone. A wonderful book from start to finish. Beautiful characters and set in a part of the world unfamiliar to me. I laughed and shed tears. A touching story, well told.

Too hard. Somebody recommended this book to me as I am Ethiopian however I find it very hard. I mean the vocabularies were confusing. I would prefer if the writer wrote it a little simpler.

Cutting for stone. Beautifully written story. I finished the book two weeks ago and am unable to stop thinking about the characters. An absolute treasure.

Cutting For Stone. I loved this book! It is 3:45 in the morning and I have just finished reading it. I couldn't wait to see what happened. Sadly, I have finished. I didn't want this book to end. It kept me enthralled throughout the whole story. The pages flew by and the words jumped off the page so that you felt every emotion, smelled every scent and knew each character intimately. An amazing read,to say the least!

Highly recommended. What a true joy it was to read this book. So well formulated is the story, that it had me from the first page of the first chapter, and never lost me all along the amazing journey! The author's talent at writing is clear from the get-go, and makes my imagination soar with clarity through all the amazing plot twists. A pleasure to read, and highly recommended for those who truly enjoy reading good literature.

A must read. I truly loved this book. I was hooked on it early on and couldn't wait to get my hands on it again. If medicine is your choice-- or even if it isn't-- this book is smart, planned, researched and beautifully written.

Cutting for Stone.....incredible!. Could not put it down

Cutting for Stone. It was well written, very detailed. The medical scenes were interesting. However, it didn't keep me captivated. I did not develop any connection to the characters.

Cutting for Stone. This book has many layers with complex characters and challenging details. It was riveting and educational. I learned so much from its vivid details. The kindness and caring shown by many of the characters were unforgettable and, at times, surprising - very thought-provoking. It is an unforgettable and beautiful book that I will read again.

Cutting for Stone. There are so many layers and themes to plumb in this intensely poignant and demanding book. Poignant for it's journey with love and loss and demanding for it's medical language and historical themes. Beyond that there is a spiritual journey of a mystical nature that will not disappoint. Cutting for Stone is both original in story and wise in discourse. A book to read more than once for pleasure and new discovery. Put on the top of your list if you ever care for patients in any facility or work with immigrant doctors.

Cutting For Stone. Well, you can take the title a couple of ways, I saw it as the main character striving to be like his father the surgeon. Great read, a story set in African history. Proves we have it so good in American hospitals. A lot of medical details, I liked it! Hema and Ghosh were the meat and potatoes of the story. When Ghosh rocked the apnea baby with a string, I knew he was not getting on the plane to America. He was wonderful. Try it,... take your time, My Berkley book Club raved about its depth and emotional journey.

Loved. Not only is this beautifully written, the characters stay with you long after ur done reading.

Cutting for stone. One of the best books I've ever read. Full of complicated love, medical intrigue, and insight into many world cultures.

Mesmerizing. I loved this book, I found the story and the writing heartbreaking and entrancing. Beautiful

Cutting for Stone. Wonderful captivating book! A page turner, so well written. Thank you!

Cutting for Stone. Epic and beautifully written!

magnanimous. A lasting impression has been made on my mind and spirit. Incredible book. An extraordinary writer with an extraordinary story.

Great. Such a great book. I was afraid to start it cuz of all the medical terms & details I knew existed from the reviews. However I did buy it & it turned out to be one of the best I've ever read. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn't put down.

Cutting for Stone. Loved it, such a great story!!

I am ambivalent about the title.. I loved this book very much. I did not want it to end. The writing is fantastic. I felt like I knew each of these characters.

Great, fabulous!. Best book in a long time. Great vocabulary, and engaging from the beginning.

Cutting for stone. As a physician, generalist and surgeon, I am in awe of the broad scope and texture of this novel. It presents medicine, life experiences, human behavior, self identity and dying as well as many other imprints of life in a unique and inviting setting. How would I fare in this novel's setting? What is my emotional capacity to endure these characters experiences? Thank you, Dr. Verghese, I enjoyed the read!

Mesmerizing. This is a lovely epic about the life of a family whose members are dedicated to medicine. The pace of the story never lags and never outruns itself. I was engaged from the beginning to the end. The story follows the lives of congenital twins . The description of life in Ethiopia and later the jarring comparisons to life in America during the same time period are entrancing. As many reviews state there is a lot of medical terminology and much of the story takes place in medical settings; however, this is just a sideline—a medium through which you will experience the true story of life, love, loss, and fulfillment. I can’t recommend this book enough.

The Most Beautiful Book.... The most beautiful book I have read in a long time. Exquisitely written with a quiet power that washes over you. I won't be reading another work of fiction anytime soon. I need to linger with these characters and this story awhile longer. Thank you Anthony Verghese for creating such a moving work & thank you to a fellow traveler on JetBlue from Chicago to Long Beach for the strong recommendation.

Couldn't set it down. I couldn't stop reading...stayed up until the early morning hours...was pulled back to the book during the day. The balance between plot, character, and technical detail is perfect.

Cutting for stone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a physician and loved the medicine discussed and explained. It is a good story of family, love, and betrayal. I agree that the first part of the book is told in almost epic detail while the second part seems rushed. My biggest problem with the book is more a problem with content. Spoiler alert if needed, but it was upsetting to me that after all that Marion turns out to be Stone's son after all instead of Ghosh. That made me sad.

Cutting for Stone. The best book I have ever read in my life, and I've read hundreds. What an amazing story. Bravo to Abraham Verghese!

What a great story about growing up in a foreign land.. The struggles of twin boy’s growing up in hospital community, then one twin venturing to the USA to complete his medical training was reviting.

Breathtaking imagery. Beautifully written with deep, meaningful passages reflecting the passion of our souls. I never thought I'd be so captivated by such in-depth medical detail, but I found it all fascinating. I want to turn around and read it all again.

Amazing. This is a captivating story with amazing character development. I rarely have the patience for fiction- I read this after a colleague suggested it- but I just could not put it down. The storyline twists & turns. The characters are so human an real. Additionally- as a medical professional, I found the medical aspect of this book detailed & accurate.

Really enjoyed this book. It popped up as a trial and I was hooked from the prologue. Love, betrayal, drama, death, pain and a lot of medical procedures- Needless to say I paid for the book after the 4 chapter trial. And I do not regret it.

Wonderful read!. This book brings together soul searching , dark humor and intrigue together in the most interesting way. After the first few pages , you won't be able to put it down

Loved. Lovely book.

Cutting for Stone. This book took me over one year to finish, which normally would not lead to a very positive rating. I really struggled to get into the book, but I'm glad I picked it up again so that I could experience the page turning thrill that this book eventually provided. The vocabulary and descriptions used in the book are fantastic. As someone currently in a medical residency program, I am both envious and in awe of the physical diagnosis skills of physicians in "developing" countries depicted so well in this book. Overall, the characters came alive for me and I felt their highs and lows. This isn't a book to pick up for a casual read, but if you are willing to put in the time, it's worth every minute.

On Cutting for Stone. I found this book to be excellent, indeed! This book is clearly worth 5 stars. It is the best book I have read in years. I read it on my IPad, and the book was so good, it made my purchase of the IPad more justifiable. My thanks to the author for such an outstanding book. Books like this will rekindle my love for reading. V

Cutting For Stone. Absolutely the most enjoyable book I've read so far this year!

Absolutely gorgeous novel.. Highly recommend.

Cutting for stone. Excellent Story!

Great on so many levels. Great as a medical story. Wonderful as a family story. Tragic as a "what if" story. Delicious with its insights into a foreign country. Esoteric with intellectual stimulation and multisyllabic symbolism. All I can say is "WOW" and "thank you" to Abraham Verghese for sharing his imagination and experiences with the rest of us.

Cutting for stone. This book is one great read keeping you guessing up to the end. It fills you with hope and leaves you with sadness and joy in the end. That two boys could live their lives in such horrific beginnings could give each other the ultimate love was wonderful.

Excellent - as a surgeon. Beyond the aspect of being an attending surgeon for 7 years; this is a tremendous book with cultural implications, deep character development with sudden shifts in the plot. Work every penny paid.

Cutting for Stone. Excellent! Beautifully written, and one of the best novels I've read in quite some time. I did not want it to end.
