The Revenant by Michael Punke Book Summary

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A thrilling tale of betrayal and revenge set against the nineteenth-century American frontier, Michael Punke's The Revenant is the astonishing story of real-life trapper and frontiersman Hugh Glass.

The year is 1823, and the trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company live a brutal frontier life. Hugh Glass is among the company’s finest men, an experienced frontiersman and an expert tracker. But when a scouting mission puts him face-to-face with a grizzly bear, he is viciously mauled and not expected to survive. Two company men are dispatched to stay behind and tend to Glass before he dies. When the men abandon him instead, Glass is driven to survive by one desire: revenge. With shocking grit and determination, Glass sets out, crawling at first, across hundreds of miles of uncharted American frontier.

Based on a true story, The Revenant is a remarkable tale of obsession, the human will stretched to its limits, and the lengths that one man will go to for retribution.

Amazing. Absolute beautiful book

Dank memes. The days of no Oscar Leo are over :/

Great Read, but.... The Revenant is a artfully written book that features perfectly crafted highs and lows concerning Hugh Glass. However, the ending in my opinion was absolute trash!!

Great Book. Hands down best book I have ever read, If you have any interest in the Fur Trade or this time period definitely read this book

Captivating from page one.. Mr. Punke and Hugh Glass do an amazing job of pulling you in from the first page. If you have a desire for travel and adventure this is a thrilling read. He does a great job of painting what life was like for the frontiersman of the early 18th century. All in all an amazing portrayal of the lifestyle. Only giving it 3 stars for a major letdown at the end. With the amount of fiction surrounding names events and places, it was disappointing to not create an ending the flowed with the overall excitement of the book. I will recommend it to others who share a love of American history and life in the west. Won't recommend as a thriller or story of vengeance.

Great read. This book is an entertaining historically based novel. The movie parallels the book but is very different. If you live in the Rocky Mountain states you will recognize many of the names of people and places.

Good read. Wanted to read the book before the movie came out. I liked the book but, I have to say, this may be a rare instance where I may enjoy the movie even more than the novel. We'll see.

An excellent book. This book has really gotten me back into reading.

M. Excellent. Well written and a book that kept me engaged. If you enjoy Erik Larson, you will like this author.

Revenant. Well written. I couldn't put it down! Plan to see the movie tomorrow. A real 5 star book. Dr. James Appleton Jr.

Excellent. loved loved this book. Movie was horrible compared to book!!! a must read!!!

The Revenant. A good read. Thanks.

Worth the read. Intense, chilling and graphic. I downloaded this book having seen the trailer for A G Inarrito's new film coming out in December, and I was not disappointed. If you are into historical, frontier and survival stories this should make it's way onto your shelf or in your mobile device.

Captured. Wonderful story that captured my attention wholly and throughout the entire book. I had to seek definitions of seldom used, never heard of, or old words every 5th page. I relish the opportunity to expand my vocabulary while being highly entertained. Awesome read.

Good read, but.... Each chapter keeps you wanting to read more! But boring ending. 3/5

Good read. Easy to read and stay interested in. No fluff or filler, just riveting and vivid accounts of survival in a violent harsh environment.

Saw movie first now read. Like both versions.. Great read! Kept me entertained and engaged at the roller coaster that Hugh Glass rides in this journey.

🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻.....too soon?. Have to admit, the movie trailers got me interested. The Golden Globes made me even more. Rumor has it LD might get an Oscar. Okay I'll read "the" book first. Sick of being disappointed by seeing "the" movie first. Figures I make this conscious decision with a book that will probably be better as a movie! Now don't get me wrong it was a great read. No regrets at all. But have to admit looking forward to the creative license Hollywood will take especially with the less than climatic literary ending. Mr Punke, you wrote a great book but I really wanted a glorious ending.

The Revenant is Brilliant. An engrossing fast paced page turner. One of the best historical novels I've ever read.

Riveting. An extremely entertaining page turner!

The Revenant. Excellent

The Revenant. Excellent book, couldn't put it down once I started reading. Was somewhat letdown by the end until I contemplated it for awhile and realized Hugh Glass found peace with his decision and was pleased with this for him. Hated for it to end, wanted the adventures of Hugh Glass to continue.

A tale of true strength. This story of Hugh Glass is a pure insight on the horrifying life of the trapped. This story has made me both grimace and sit in awe as Hugh Glass makes his way back to civilization even though it seemed as if even God wanted him dead. I find it hard for anybody to find a negative view on this exhilarating story.

This book was far exceeded my expectations.. Hugh Glass is a one bad SOB. This was a true comeback and perseverance story. I couldn’t put it down.

Excelllent Read. Very good book. Much enjoyed. Reads fast and keeps the reader intrigued.

A Tall Tale Based on a True Story?. I spent most of my life hunting in the forests and fields of Michigan, and enjoy reading accounts of hunters, adventurers, cowboys, and mountain men. I decided to read this book before I saw the movie, and took particular interest in the claim it was based on a true story. Unfortunately, I did not find the authors style agreeable to me, and was rather annoyed with the continuous (and often silly) perilous situations Glass was faced with. I was actually delighted to learn, at the end of the book, the book was mostly fiction. It is that, and not all really believable fiction either. I'm not sure what all the fuss over the movie is, besides the fact it was filmed on location in the wilds of Canada, and is starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This is a tall tale, and not much more.

Read it before the movie! Page turner for sure.. I saw a trailer they are making this book into a movie. The movie looked like a great epic sage of the frontier fur traders in the 1800's. The story of High Glass is a true story and the author has done a wonderful job of weaving in real people with some fiction for a great adventure novel.

Amazing book. Original read, adventure

Worthy. Good read and well done. Not an exemplary historical standout for the period of time but has psychological meaning woven into action and non actions within the lifetime of Mr. Glass - recommended to those who enjoy the exploration of the old west and the challenges presented to those that chose to look around the corner.

Gripping and educational. I loved the history, geography and wilderness survival details. Very well done. I've already bought another of his titles to read.

Shuddup and buy this book. Mr. Punke's novel, the Revenant, is a captivating, dark epic that will capture your imagination and keep it even when you put the book down, bleary-eyed like one of his memorable characters. If you're a man like me, comfortably lost in the age of GPS, you'll love losing yourself in this place. The wilderness is painted in broad impressionistic strokes, which suits the time, and me, just fine. The action flows as steady as the cold rivers therein, and the moments of reflection are as true as the North Star under which they were made. If only the teachers that inspired the author could be as skillful raconteurs, this time in our history wouldn't be such a mystery. If you know a man who doesn't read fiction, buy him this book. Watching the movie, albeit a version of this story undoubtedly more spectacular than I could ever imagine, just won't be as satisfying as spending hours, like the protagonist, dragging yourself, from page to page, tired but feeling very much alive.

The Revenant. It seems the men and women of these times were spectacles of endurance. It is utterly amazing to me how our founding fathers mapped and explored our lands in these times. From the heat and humidity of the south with the insects and swamp, to the extremes of winter cold and the immediacy of their self reliance the people of these times were true pioneers. The added level of war with all factions of the indigenous peoples elevates the test. Even the words within this book that express this as fully as they can, I believe pale in the true test of these times what would have been endured. This book is an impressive instance of these times. It was a great read and one I would highly recommend.

They should have made this movie.. Read it. You will see.
