The City of Mirrors by Justin Cronin Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A thrilling finale to a trilogy that will stand as one of the great achievements in American fantasy fiction.”—Stephen King

You followed The Passage. You faced The Twelve. Now enter The City of Mirrors for the final reckoning. As the bestselling epic races to its breathtaking finale, Justin Cronin’s band of hardened survivors await the second coming of unspeakable darkness.

The world we knew is gone. What world will rise in its place?

The Twelve have been destroyed and the terrifying hundred-year reign of darkness that descended upon the world has ended. The survivors are stepping outside their walls, determined to build society anew—and daring to dream of a hopeful future.

But far from them, in a dead metropolis, he waits: Zero. The First. Father of the Twelve. The anguish that shattered his human life haunts him, and the hatred spawned by his transformation burns bright. His fury will be quenched only when he destroys Amy—humanity’s only hope, the Girl from Nowhere who grew up to rise against him.

One last time light and dark will clash, and at last Amy and her friends will know their fate.

Look for the entire Passage trilogy:

Praise for The City of Mirrors

“Compulsively readable.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The City of Mirrors is poetry. Thrilling in every way it has to be, but poetry just the same . . . The writing is sumptuous, the language lovely, even when the action itself is dark and violent.”—The Huffington Post

“This really is the big event you’ve been waiting for . . .  A true last stand that builds and comes with a bloody, roaring payoff you won’t see coming, then builds again to the big face off you’ve been waiting for.”—NPR

“A masterpiece . . .  with The City of Mirrors, the third volume in The Passage trilogy, Justin Cronin puts paid to what may well be the finest post-apocalyptic epic in our dystopian-glutted times. A stunning achievement by virtually every measure.”—The National Post

“Justin Cronin’s Passage trilogy is remarkable for the unremitting drive of its narrative, for the breathtaking sweep of its imagined future, and for the clear lucidity of its language.”—Stephen King

Fantastic !. This third book of the series was definitely worth the wait ! Once again the story moves forward with the continuing saga of of Amy, Zero and the Twelve. Another long read but well worth effort. If you haven't read the first two you better get started. This has been a wonderful adventure !

Meh. The other books were better. Wasn't predictable but strayed from the course. The huge portion on the history of zero was a little much.

The City of Mirrors. As someone who has waited a long time for this book, I am very happy with the result. This is an amazing book in that I was reading one section (no spoilers) and completely forgot the overall main story. It was like I was in another book altogether and it was just as interesting and engaging. I’m sad to say goodbye to this series - although one of the characters is not closed out like the others. [ Makes me wonder if Justin gave himself a small opening to come back to if he so chooses :-)]. I loved this Trilogy - I brought the first book in London on a trip, based on a response I got from a reader on a train. I asked him how was the book? and he looked up and blinked a couple of times before responding, sorry I have a hard time coming back to reality while I’m reading this book. I have been the same way when I’m reading this Trilogy - and I live in Denver. You get totally immersed. Great book, great trilogy, hope to encounter another trilogy worth a couple of years of my dedication.

Fine ending. The third book in the trilogy is a fine ending. Have read the first two books 3 times waiting for the City of Mirrors. It was worth the wait.

Humanity in a Dystopian Future. Despite a somewhat confusing start, this book quickly became a fascinating and engrossing story. Chapters that jump about in time provide different cross-sections of the main characters. Intrigue and violence compete with love and family to hook the reader emotionally as well as logically. While six main characters are involved throughout a lengthy period of years, at least a dozen intermediate characters are developed in depth and create much interest. When the ending comes dramatically, the reader knows exactly how everyone got to their position, and why they respond the way they do. The story is graphic enough to create mental images that are better than a film. This is a long novel, but not very easy to put down. This is a classic depiction of human values in a dystopian future.

Worth the wait. As post-apocalyptic fiction goes, this is the new standard.

Excellent. Highly recommend. Read them all in order!

Extraordinary book. Like every reader said “ great story “, good luck putting the book down!

Amazing. The fabric of the trilogy is knitted together with a rare brilliance. The characters are cherished old friends that continue to excite and delight. Justin Cronin wraps up his story with insight, warmth, and finesse. Too many trilogies get redundantly boring by the final story; this story was fresh to the final word. Thank you Mr. Cronin.

Just fantastic!. A wonderful end to an amazing story. Thank you so much Justin Cronin.

OUTSTANDING!. Well worth the wait and a brilliant ending to the trilogy! These three books are going in to my top ten reads! Thank you Justin for a superb story!!!

Loved this series. I loved the whole series! Worth the read.

Captivating narrative. Not in ages has a series of novels captivated my attention & imagination. A truly exquisite story; one I recommend with great enthusiasm.

Worth the wait..!!. I did not want this book to end! But, I could not put it down!

Miraculous. This capstone to Cronin's trilogy is a miracle of literature and entertainment. His magical gift of drawing you into a vivid world populated by frail human characters sets up his even more extraordinary talent of making you shudder and cheer as a vampire viral apocalypse sweeps the earth, so rich in detail of hope and love and horror that it feels like you're peeking into Revelations future more than reading a work of fiction. Superb. Nearly perfect. A satisfying and worthy end to the book of Amy.

A great ending. A perfect ending to a fantastic trilogy. Several times in the last 75 pages I thought that would be a great ending right there. But when I got to the end. The final sentence sealed it for me. I understood and was very happy with the book.

Best. Truly awesome. The series is a masterpiece. The 3rd, awe inspiring. Perfection.

Amazing!!!!!!. The Passage and The Twelve were great, but City of Mirrors blew me away! Wanted it to never end. So easy to read, flows like a river. Highly recommend the entire trilogy ending with this magnificent final book.

Fitting End to a Great Story. First, do yourself a great favor and read (or reread) The Passage and The Twelve. Then dig into this great conclusion. This book and the whole series has a huge scope, surprising moments of sparkling beauty, and a profound depth that amazes. In a fictional world of monsters, we readers can find humanity in the good, the bad, and ourselves. Well worth every moment with it. Highly recommend.

Excellent!!. Absolutely loved this trilogy! Fantastic writing that kept me intrigued! Love the ending and the way the author ties all the characters together! Well done

Oh,no. I just realized I was putting off reading the last words of this amazing series of books. I became very close to many of the characters. But I did and now it will take me weeks, months before I find another book or books that holds me like these ones did. Thank you.

Epic!. Justin Cronin ends this trilogy with a sweeping tale. A satisfying end to this epic story!

Amazing. Terrific read, a great finale to a marvelously-written trilogy.

Closed the Circle. Very few writers have the ability to satisfactory or make the effort to complete the journey with a large cast of characters in a great arc of a story. Most times we are either left with a rushed effort to a T in the road with no turn taken or a meandering no end insight ending. Justin Cronin took the time and made the effort to complete the characters adventures both individually and as a cast. Bravo.

Wonderful!. I've read the trilogy, and now I'm just sad it's over. I've felt as if I've LIVED in these three books, as if I walked beside the characters and fought their battles. The "City of Mirrors" was the best, in my opinion, but all three were very very difficult to put down. What can I say, but, "wow!"

BRILLIANT!. It pains me to have finally finished reading the Passage trilogy! Masterfully written, almost poetic. When I finished the third iBook, I immediately bought hardcover copies of the series, and plan to read them all over again.

So dreadfully boring. Blah blah blah....the whole life story of doctor whatever, who cares. Should’ve stopped with the first book.

A fitting ending. Well written and does more than justice to the first two books. There is more below the surface regarding the human race and just what is happiness. Not a cookie cutter ending, but one you're sure to enjoy.
