El relato narra las aventuras y desventuras de un joven de la aristocracia californiana llamado Don Diego De la Vega, un joven noble, hijo de un hacendado español, que vivía en el entonces pueblo de Los Ángeles, en la antigua California española de comienzos del siglo XIX. De la Vega, se encuentra con que el gobierno colonial se ha vuelto una tiranía que explota y somete a los habitantes de esas tierras, tanto indígenas como colonos, además de cometer todo tipo de desmanes y actos de corrupción. Diego entonces, decide ponerse una máscara para combatir a los malhechores, transformándose en un jinete enmascarado con una capa negra y se hace llamar «El Zorro»; y junto a su sirviente sordomudo, Bernardo, enfrenta al capitán Ramón y al sargento González; lucha contra las injusticias cometidas por las autoridades y defiende a los oprimidos.
«El Zorro» es uno de los mitos más populares, emblemáticos y de más renombre gracias al cine y la TV, (dilatadísima filmografía), además de inspirar varios imitadores de diversos nombres (p.ej.: «El Coyote»); así como precuelas y secuelas. Jamás imaginaría su creador Johnston McCulley, allá por 1919, —reportero de sucesos y autor de novelas de aventuras de escasa trascendencia—, que su narración por entregas, tendría aquella enorme repercusión, y le obligaría a conectarse con un arte naciente (el cinematógrafo), y que su personaje se haría mundialmente famoso.
