Stille Treppe, Hausarrest, Handyverbot: Allzu schnell ist man als Elternteil mit seinem Latein am Ende und greift zum Mittel der Bestrafung. Doch damit wird sich das Verhalten des Kindes nicht dauerhaft verbessern, denn mit Bestrafung versuchen wir nur, das Problem oberflächlich zu lösen. Da die Strafe in keinem direkten Zusammenhang zum Fehlverhalten des Kindes steht, kann es keine sinnvolle Verknüpfung herstellen und wird sein Verhalten nicht ändern, sondern nur wütend auf die aus seiner Sicht unfairen Eltern sein. Der eigentliche Grund für das Verhalten wird nicht gelöst.
Nur wenn das Kind die natürlichen Konsequenzen seines Tuns sieht und mit den Folgen konfrontiert wird (zum Beispiel zu spät zur Schule kommt, weil es den Bus wegen Trödelns verpasst hat), lernt es daraus eigenverantwortlich zu handeln. Aufgabe der Eltern ist es, diesen Entwicklungsprozess ihres Kindes zu akzeptieren und zu fördern, damit sie eine enge Verbindung mit ihrem Kind eingehen können. Dieses Buch hilft dabei, dem Kind einen Sinn für Selbstverantwortung beizubringen und so zu einer von Respekt und Liebe geprägten Beziehung zu gelangen.
