Hitler había ordenado que no se aceptase ninguna propuesta de rendición; su propósito era exterminar a todos los habitantes, ya que no quería supervivientes que hubiera que alimentar. Lo que mantuvo la resistencia e impidió que los alemanes ocuparan la ciudad no fue la fuerza del ejército soviético, sino la voluntad colectiva de sus habitantes que, a costa de cerca de un millón de muertos, supieron hacer frente a la barbarie, sin dejarse abatir.
