Unnatural Causes by Dr Richard Shepherd Book Summary

THE TRUE CRIME BOOK OF THE YEAR AND 18-WEEK SUNDAY TIMES TOP 10 BESTSELLER

'One of the most fascinating books I have read in a long time. Engrossing, a haunting page-turner. A book I could not put down' The Times, BOOKS OF THE YEAR
__________

Meet the forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd.

He solves the mysteries of unexplained or sudden death.

He has performed over 23,000 autopsies, including some of the most high-profile cases of recent times; the Hungerford Massacre, the Princess Diana inquiry, and 9/11.

He has faced serial killers, natural disaster, 'perfect murders' and freak accidents.

His evidence has put killers behind bars, freed the innocent, and turned open-and-shut cases on their heads.

Yet all this has come at a huge personal cost.

Unnatural Causes tells the story of not only the cases and bodies that have haunted him the most, but also how to live a life steeped in death.

Thoughtful, revealing, chilling and always unputdownable, if you liked All That Remains, War Doctor and This is Going to Hurt you'll love this.

Fascinating. Engaging and unputdownable. Just a pity that it had to end! Maybe I should have been a pathologist....

Fantastic book. I have never reviewed a book before, but have to say this was an awesome and inspiring read. Dr Shepherd, thank you for sharing insights into your life’s work and your vocational commitment to this often overlooked discipline. This was a difficult book to put down... feeling a bit gutted that I have now finished it.

Fascinating. Very interesting read into the world of pathology. The real science of what happens when we die

Pathologically Brilliant. This is a riveting book, it just keeps you turning pages and don’t want to put down. Dr Shepard has had one hell of a life and so glad he chose to share it with the world.

Good. I liked this book, it covers both Shepherds personal life and professional life, giving us an insight on how he works. There are a few high profile cases in here such as Princess Diana, as well as a variety of unknown ones. I found this book a little slow at times but overall it was a nice read and his work is very impressive.

Dr Shepard's Unnatural Causes. A great read especially for my age group, 70's. Every chapter was fascinating.

Must read. Absolutely enthralling, read in 2 days as I couldn’t put it down!

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic read! I have recommended it countless number of times already and will continue to. Thank you for sharing your story. Amazing.

Couldn't put it down!. This is fantastic, I devoured it in days. Dr Shepard at times made me forget where I was; his writing is so immersive. He describes the sights and smells of the medical profession eloquently without being grotesque. A brilliant read for people both in and outside of the medical profession.

Addictive. I couldn’t put it down. It’s so well written and so fascinating.

Brilliant. Absolutely amazing from start to finish would highly recommend

Excellent insight. An excellent and fascinating insight into the life of a pathologist.

Warm, relatable, interesting. Radiating a humbling love of humanity. Yes, I would absolutely recommend this book... Never thought I’d say that when I was judging the book by the author’s job title!

A fascinating book. I’ve found this book to be fascinating and thoroughly interesting read. I didn’t find it squeamish, as you might expect it to be, and it is amazing how many well known cases are talked about in depth. Thoroughly recommended.

Forensically honest. Lovely book written by an interesting but unusual guy.

Very thought provoking. I read police procedural fiction all the time as well as criminal fiction. All blood and guts. To read this was similar in so much as a page turner but the detail was sometimes painful for the reader as this was about real people. Their lives and their deaths. Not fiction, not part of imagination - but real. This I found fascinating as well as so very sad. I loved the book. I would recommend it for a reader of the stories I like to read but also to anyone with an interest in life.

Unnatural causes - great read. Each page of his working life kept me guessing and wanting more, what an amazing profession and what a dedicated man

Very good knowledgeable read!. This book was recommended by a friend and she chose correctly. Interesting read with private life not withheld but not made overly preoccupied. Told to an interested member of the public to understand and learn from. Cases I recognise from the news (pretty much all of them due to my age) told without too much gore but horror nonetheless (as they all were). A very good recommended read. I wish there were more interesting reads like this.

Brilliant. Not what I’d call a gripping read but so interesting throughly enjoyed and would recommend to all

Brilliant. So interesting, couldn’t put it down!

Brilliant. Utterly fascinating and beautifully written account of his career. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Unnatural Causes.. This was a brilliant book. You will learn something in every chapter, even if you have some medical knowledge.

Gripping, unputdownable!. Highly recommend if you like crime thrillers

Great book. First book I have read cover to cover in 10 years. Fascinating and a great read.

Exceeded my expectations. What a read. Unbelievably gripping & intense, I couldn’t put this book down. I felt I was there with Richard shepherd the whole time- on every case! This book is a must read and will have you captivated immensely by its strong nature of his truth and care for the deceased while troubles with the hardship of PTSD. Hats of to you doc!
