Catching a Serial Killer by Stephen Fulcher Book Summary
The true story behind the ITV series, A Confession
'The gripping allure of long-form podcasts, such as Serial' Observer
On the evening of Saturday, 19 March 2011, D.S. Stephen Fulcher receives a life-changing call that thrusts him into a race against the clock to save missing 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan, who was last seen at a nightclub in Swindon. Steve knows from experience that he has a small window of time to find Sian alive, but his hopes are quickly dashed when his investigation leads him to Christopher Halliwell, a cabbie with sick obsessions.
Following the investigation as it develops hour-by-hour, Steve’s gripping inside story of the cat-and-mouse situation that ensues shows how he hunted down Halliwell – his number-one suspect – which led him to the discovery of Sian’s body and another victim, Becky Godden-Edwards, who had been missing since 2002. The murders shocked the nation and Halliwell become one of the most hated men in Britain. Since then, he has been linked to several murders and disappearances, and has been called 'sick in the head' by an ex-cellmate for his unrelenting hatred of women.
Catching a Serial Killer is a thrilling, devastating and absorbing look at a real-life murder case and potentially one of the UK’s most prolific serial killers.

Excellent riveting read. Although excellent to read and riveting, it was a factual and very frank accounts of the police procedure in catching Halliwell. It was understanding to read from a local, knowing all the haunts mentioned in the book. I was left with a sadness and a frustration at what happened to Stephen Fulcher, it should never have happened and yes we need more men like him in the force as I would also love someone like him to investigate if this happened to my children! It makes you think that there is a higher power residing over the procedures and laws, Stephen was a scapegoat! The Police are a joke! Laws are a joke! Great honest eye opening book. Bless the souls that have gone. Well done Stephen - you deserve to be proud.
Excellent. From the outset this book draws you in. Although centred on Halliwell I fully empathise with Steve Fulcher in the way he wax treated by those he served, for doing his job and doing it right he is ostracised and hung out to dry. Having been the recipient of the same shabby treatment I wholeheartedly relate to his circumstances and admire his courage to expose senior ranking bureaucrats. A must read for any law enforcement officer or those thinking of taking the oath.
Excellent. What a thorough account of such a tragedy, written so that people unfamiliar with legal terms can understand. I was disgusted to read about how Steve Fulcher was treated, he did everything he could to try and save Sian's life, which is what I'd expect if that had been my daughter. I'm sorry he has since left the police force, we need more police men like him, especially the way society is going today. Unfortunately I doubt Christopher halliwell will ever be bought to justice for any other lives he has taken, without Steve fulcher on the case.
heartbreaking. this was such a sad read - as it says in the book sadly the victims don’t come first. Heartbreaking but a must read Steve should hold his head high we need more people like him in this world
